What modern invention/innovation do you wish had *never* been developed?

Never before has one generation so thoroughly obliterated the memory of everything that preceded it. Even in the Era, the average American had a decent command of the popular music of the 1880s, 1890s, 1900s, and 1910s, thru constant repetition in grammar-school music classes, around Scout campfires, and around the old family pump organ. The popular culture of the twenties, thirties, and forties existed alongside that which preceded it -- but didn't completely erase it from memory.

Sometimes I can't help but suspect that it was all part of "The Plan."

I wish I could erase the 60s and 70s from the collective memory.......

You do know the worst thing to come out of the 70s? The 80s! Nothing good happened during the 80s. Music, TV, movies, fashion, food, hair, cars, motorcycles, I can not think of one redeeming thing to come out of the 80s! Lets just hope there is no 80s revival.

I'd have to respectfully disagree. I think the 80s produced some great music compared to the 60s and the incredibly dismal 70s. A lot of great music by bands with unique sounds that were all their own such as U2, Simple Minds, Talk Talk and many others. A few good movies also came out in the 80s. But as far as cars, fashion, etc., we were still sort of stuck in the 70s in those areas so I agree with you on those points.

Good Lord... The Smiths, The Cure, J&MC, New Order, Nick Cave, Pixies, Wedding Present, The The, The Fall, Aztec Camera, Talulah Gosh, Primal Scream, Cocteau Twins...

I could go on at some length. :)

The 70s were an explosion of fantastic and inventive music, unlikely to be matched anytime soon. Hands down, it was the greatest decade in popular music. And it's not even close

Cole Porter, the Gershwins, and Jerome Kern weren't alive in the '70s, hence the '70s were not the greatest decade in popular music. Not even close.

American popular music reached its absolute zenith on Sunday, July 26, 1936. On that afternoon, Fred Astaire and Johnny Green's Orchestra teamed in the American Record Company's studios in Los Angeles to create the finest recording of the finest American popular song ever written, Jerome Kern's "The Way You Look Tonight." Nothing has ever equalled it.

Add The Beatles, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to that and I agree. :p
Wow, talk of no good music coming out of certain decades, 60s 70s 80s and then suggesting these three great artists were anything less than great. I understand everyone has their personal preferences but I think many millions of knowledgeable music lovers and even music scholars and critics would beg to differ.

I think long ago, such "dubbing" or changing a pitch issue was only done in the studio by a master control. I have heard they have the gizmos you are speaking of, and I am sure you are so very correct about Cher needing to use one. She is NO spring chicken....pluck pluck pluck! LOL!:eeek:
Autotune is an actual brand name of an electronic program that does pitch correction. It can be used on vocals and some instruments as long as one note at a time is being played. It can also be used as an effect such as the Cher song. She can actually sing so wasn't used to correct her.
Now it is being used all over contemporary R&B type music as an effect and also it is being used on people that really can't sing to make it sound like they can sing.
It is used live in some situations but it is hard to manipulate in a live setting. Mostly it is used on live performances that are mixed/fixed in the studio and replayed later. Broadcast TV or put out as a recording.
Unfortunately Autotune is now over used to make even singers who can sing, too perfect. The performance can lose the human artistic feeling most of us enjoy hearing.

Ahem, some of us were BORN in the 80's! Though I guess that doesn't do much to disprove your point..

The scary thing is I'm not even 30 yet and find myself grumbling about kids these days, decline in standards and so on..
