what length do you think this 1920s style leather jacket should be?

This is a stick size 38 I've been sent to try on. As anticipated it is too small and I will need a size 40.

What I have to work out is how much length to add.

I know it's a short style and I like the feel of this fit. But I'm not sure where exactly it's supposed to sit. If the belt is our point of reference, then should it cover the whole belt and if so with how much overhang, or only partially cover the belt, or sit on top of the belt?

Of course fit is a personal thing. But I like the design of this jacket - the front is longer - and I wanna stay true to how the thing is intended to be worn as far as I can. That said, I'm not about to start wearing trousers up to my armpits just to accommodate it - so it's gonna have to fit in with the rest of my wardrobe, which is mainly modern style low rise jeans like those in the pics.

If you have an opinion great. And if that comes with a rationale of sorts even better.

last thing to add: in case it's not completely clear, on those close ups the tape measure for the front starts on 2" and for the back starts on 3"

Hi Schitzo

For me, a jacket like that should just cover the belt holding up you jeans. The jeans I wear are slightly higher waisted than those Lees, so it might even be OK for me.

If that's the waist you prefer jeanswise, I would add a couple of inches:D;)

Yeah, I'd get it down to at least covering your belt - perhaps even enough length so that it doesn't ride up when you lift your arms up. I'm thinking comfort and lack of self-consciousness here. Like the jacket. Who makes it?

Schitz, unlike me, you appear to have a relatively long torso in relation to your height, and I would say 3" added to the body and maybe 2.5" to the sleeves. You might not even be able to take a deep breath in a size 40 in that style :D and maybe consider a size 42.

is that 2 inches or 3 or 2.5 Major? Please try to be precise! :D

Sorry, mate.

At the back, I would take it down to where the 5 is. On the front, I would take it down to where the 4.5 is. That should maintain the longer front, I guess.

Lot's of folks would probably go a bit longer, but I prefer short jackets. I think the design looks cool in a short length.

Thanks Fanch. The sleeve length I know already it's the body I'm undecided on. Sure I have an opinion, but lets just see what the peanut gallery says first..

I should clarify here that in order to maintain the integrity of the design - with it's longer front - whatever is added I think should be the same for back and front

Yikes! that's a tight fit! Only joking - I like a slightly longer fit than most but I understand you want the vintage look so I would go with 4 1/2" front and 5" back. Got to cover the belt at the very least!

Schitzo, using the measuring tape as a reference, I would bring the jacket down in back to the 6" line and let the front work from there. I think there needs to be enough jacket material to cover not only the pants belt but occasionally a shirt tail or tee shirt etc..if A.L. Is willing have them send the size 40 over for a trial fit as well. Not Brown again ??? Take a peek at the black one on the sale page in size 40 :). £200 off

If you are interested in a total vintage look, shoot for some tough fabric slacks (a hearty twill should work) that sit at your navel and keep your jacket at the length it is.

That's based on what you say you like. Of course. Sleeves need a lot too. But you can figure that out.
My new Ventura fits higher, and I wear lower rise pants now. It doesn't cover too much. And I dig it.
Don't apologize for what you like. But also make sure you can move in it - obviously that's too small everywhere.
