hi friends,

i'm a fool-time musician and have been thinking of a light, short, badass leather jacket that i can wear with some nice gig-worthy shirts, pants, shoes/boots. i guess kind of a 70s thing but w/o giant lapels etc ..

can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks,
mike

As much as I want to point you to the Aero Hippie jacket, I think you'd want something less constricting and in goat or lightweight steer/horsehide. I thought of the Bill Kelso Duke but it has a big lapel. Thedi Leathers possibly?

I know you said you were against the giant lapels/collar thing and tho I'm not much into movie jackets I think this jacket is pretty rock and roll and I'd probably trade just about all of mine for it.

Possibly an Aero Rockafella or Sea Biscuit though these too have quite large lapels.Plenty of well-worn biker jackets to choose from also, from bare essential cafe-racer styles to cross-zipped Bucos

thank you, fellas' .. these are all beautiful. the sea biscuit is sweet! (I'm definitely getting a half belt some day) what i will do is dig through some pics (just google bowie or eno, right ?) and find some pics. ton, you're on the right track ;)
i'm thinking something lighter than even a cafe racer. i have a nice brooks that i enjoy wearing. thing is, it gets hot under lights. something dressier?

Check out the thread that Stringmaster posted when he received his custom Premier Highwayman recently. He is a musician as well, and I think he was looking for similar attributes when he designed the jacket. I think Nick123 made a good suggestion that goat would make for a comfortable jacket that allows good freedom of movement.

But it doesn't need to be a $1000 + jacket right? Then again, maybe this is what you're looking for? Lambskin LL Dominator in Brown...

Sadly, these are idiotically expensive.

Living in Southern California, I hear what you're saying. Many here will say that thicker leathers aren't warmer...that the lining makes the difference, and that might be true for colder situations like in Northern Europe :). In warmer climates though, thick heavy leather puts me off. Thedi offers some great hides AND styles. My all-time favorite hide for warmer situations would be Himel's American Steerhide. Amazing stuff! Lighter weight, pliable, durable, and beautiful.

Ton, I am just glad someone else liked that Wolverine jacket, I particularly liked the shoulders and back on it. Does anyone know who made that one ?
There's a slew of crappy knock offs. I haven't been able to find the original manufacturer.
This one might be a job for Johnson Leathers. I'm sure Alan and co. could get her done.
I'm surprised the Logans Closet guy didn't have Vanson do one. Of all the wolverine jackets this one was by far the coolest imho.

I'm with @Monitor with a Lewis Leather (LL) Corsair or Dominator but am a bit off put with the LL patch that LL requires be sewn on. An alternative would be an Aero Sheene or Cafe Racer (same pattern) or even an Aero Board Racer based on the Buco J-100 design. All of those jackets are simple, understated, and have wide application.

I like Monitor's suggestion, but don't know how long the lamb would last under the guitar strap. Lamb sometimes has a hard time walking around by itself without any irritants. As someone else suggested, I think goat would be ideal. Lightweight and durable, it could take all that guitar strap could throw at it.

I had a wee look, he did do at least a prototype jacket. Is he still going, iirc he was in Kilmarnock which is just a kick in the posterior away from me. The only other info I could find was that the original was a custom job.
