I had a Glenfiddich, and I would pick it over The Glenlivet. I also had a sip of Macallan (not sure which age). It was amazing.
You are about right on the beam there.

Tried a Banff 38yo 1971 on the weekend while I was visiting Christchurch NZ and it was lovely.

Wow! That must cost plenty! I don't think that is even still around anymore.

I love smoky. I like latakia. I like smoky teas like lapsang souchong. However, I do not like smoky in my food for some reason.
If you're buying, no problem. It's been gone since 1983. It's too light and grassy for me. For a silent still, I much prefer Brora.
It wasn't too bad. It was 44 NZ dollars. Nicely presented and it means you can try the rarer and more expensive whisky without having to invest in a whole bottle. For those visiting Christchurch it was at last word whiskey and cocktail bar.
Thank you for the Ardberg recommendation. I need something for the premiere of Mad Men.You would love Ardbeg. Or the aforementioned Brora (if you got lots 'o $).

Caol Ila. A friend once commented it smells of roadkill. But for me there's no other!
Haha, well I guess it's not for the faint-hearted
It certainly is pungent but I like it too. Better than how my friend describes it---smells like a wet moldy mop.
James, ummmm you just stated that you like the smell / taste of a wet moldy mop... Are you SURE that this belongs in "The Connoisseur" section of the lounge??

I love me some peat. Caol Ila probably my least favorite of the peaty bunch, but their unpeated version is very tasty.
