Disney tall crown fedora. Was able to save the factory tag during restoration. Felt is soft and dense and more of a mid-weight compared to a lot of fedoras of this era.

My new baby. You guys know; this is Optimo's retail version of the hat Johnny Depp wore in the 2013 movie "Public Enemy". I didn't realize the movie hat was creased on a turn. I noticed the turn yesterday when I posted the pics in the new hat thread, and I confirmed it again this morning. Pretty cool. This is my first hat creased on a turn - at least on purpose. I do lopsided dents all the time lol.

I have also read that there are some differences between the hats Optimo delivered for the movie and the hat they ultimately offered for sale as a replica of the movie hat.

If you are familiar with those differences, and/or you can see the difference in the hat I'm wearing please let me know.

I took pictures in the sun and the shade. I really, really, one more really like this hat.

A funereal day today, both weather-wise and sad news-wise. Worse than even the news of Batsakes Hat Shop, the world lost Irish troubadour, Glen Hansard, one of my favorite musicians. The day called for an unusual black, for me, a modern Mayser with an unusual hatband treatment.

Shocking news about Glen. He was a real man of the people. One of the great sons of Dublin gone too soon. A fitting tribute to wear the black.

I'm a little dense, what does creased on a turn mean? Nothing about that looks particularly lopsided to me. Nice lid!

The most famous example of this is the Indy Raiders hat. Supposedly, Harrison Ford messed with the hat intentionally during filming to give it the look that he wanted. This resulted in the "point" of the hat not pointing directly down the center of the hat, but somewhat to one side. This also appears to be the case with my hat. I think I found something this morning that said this was intentional with the movie hat, but now I can't find it, so maybe I was wrong. I'll see if I can figure it out in the morning. :)

Gotcha. The Stetson Royal DeLuxe homburg I bought this spring was creased like that, but similarly looked pretty much fine on the head. I wonder if it looks different from a more removed perspective or if it's just one of those details that someone like us notices immediately when looking at the underside of the hat and would slip right by everyone else.

Pretty comfortable outside this morning so Ill start the day in felt. Today its a Stetson Diamond Jim G U N Club hat. Always liked the braided hatband on this one.

As a leatherworker, this hat gives me a chance to pass on a warning. Please dont use mink oil on leather sweatbands. Depending on the topcoat finish on the leather, it can dissolve the finish. Ive had a couple hats over the years where the smooth leather finish just scraped off with a fingernail.

I was lucky with this one in that it left a fairly even surface and a nice comfy suede finish on the sweatband. Just wipe any perspiration off and let it dry. If you have to clean up sweat stains, a light saddle soap treatment is safer

Now you know

Maybe a bartender can go back and clean up some of the seats and restoration threads and yank the inaccurate recommendations to use mink oil! Some people swear by it, but maybe they've just gotten lucky?

I tried some Bee natural mink oil on the black sweatband of a 1940s stetson homburg and (although it is only a sample of one) was not impressed with the result. The surface became rough after using the product and while still wearable would have been better to do nothing at all. It takes longer to get a sweatband comfortable to wear again after applying Pecard's (due to the residue), but it seems to do a much better job at helping to restore some life to old bands.

For today, a Portis Beaver Blend. For me, it's a knockabout hat and, unlike others I've read about here, a very thick sturdy felt. This one had to be refurb-ed when I got it, as I couldn't even tell when the original looked like, it was so grungy and crushed. A bit moth-eaten in places that aren't noticable, like my Akubra hats, it'll stand up to the rain we're expecting today.

it really comes down to the leather and finish. Chrome tanned leathers like soft lambskin dont really need it anyway.... Vegtable tanned cowhide or calfskin seem particularly seceptable to damage as they usually have a top finish applied. For smooth finish good condition leather I like a food grade carnuba wax. I do like Pecards for older dry leather to get some moisture back in, but unless thoroughly wiped off the surface, it can play havoc with causing the forehead to sweat ( and leave funny marks on the skin)

As a side note, shoemakers dislike mink oil. Over time it affects how well the leather fibers hold together ( cracks in shoes. ) Waxes are safer
