What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Today I pulled out my one and only bona fide bowler. This is the hat (not this one, specifically, this shape) that started me down this dark path about 20 years ago. I tried on a bowler in the hat shop in Charleston, SC, and I immediately thought "how 'bout that - I hat I don't hate on me". I had previously not been a "hat guy" at all - no baseball caps, nada.

I got the thumbs down from my wife, who said I would never wear it; too costume-y, so unfortunately I put back on the shelf. She may have cost me twenty years of hat-collecting, but probably saved me 20k and at least one marriage. ;)

Anyway, we are making up for lost time, and this winter I will prove her wrong lol.

Burton Taylor Bowler. One of my favorite hats. Not actually wearing it on a tilt - I think my head is just naturally crooked :)

My wife told me the same thing! Lol
The bowler easily works on you.

O. F. Hess "Praga", possibly late 1930s. This Soft Felt was made by Karel Misík Husinec / Hussinetz, Czechoslovakia (South Bohemia and under the Austrian Hungarian Empire up to WWI). Karel Misik acquired the O. F. Hess Karlin / Karolinenthal, Cadastral Area of Prague, Czechoslovakia (Bohemia and under the Austria Hungarian Empire up to WWI) from his uncle / founder Andrew Felix Hess in 1927. This Soft Felt is from my 2015 NOS Czech find.

Coffee under my favorite beater today. Started life as a Stetson Gus, but ranch life got the better of it. A goat chewed a chunk out of the brim ( trimmed brim to 2-1/4" to get it oval again), and a hydraulic line sprayed fluid all over it. three or four gas baths and is resembles a silverbelly again ( got a lot softer too). I temporarily threw on a cloth panama hatband back when, and its been there ever since. Very few hats ever get thrown away around here. Truly a hat I never worry about.

Love this color, do you happen to remember what it’s called?

Here is the original listing on Ebay:

“New hand made hand sewn Fedora Hat size 7 1/4", 100% rabbit fur felt, the color is a steel gray, the hat band is made of 1 1/2" wide vintage grosgrain ribbon burgundy color, Medium Brown leather sweatband 2" wide. I block the fur felt using water and steam to pull the felt over the wooden hat block and after the felt is dry, I work on the felt until it has a smooth feel, I cut the brim to a 3" width, I cut and sew the leather sweatband to the proper size and then sew it into the hat by hand, then I make a hat band and sew it to the hat by hand, then I use steam to shape the hat brim and crown, the last thing that I do is make the satin hat liner and sew it into the hat, I put a lot of work into each hat that I make, all sewing is by hand, I don't know how to use a sewing machine, I couldn't sew a straight line without some type of guide. I sign the back side of the leather sweatband with the date that the hat was made by myself and Busted Hats.”

Size: 7 1/4

Signed — Yes

Color — Steel Gray/Blue

Material — Fur

Fabric Type — Felt

Vintage — No

Brand — Handmade by Busted Hats

Model — Fedora Busted hats
