Echter Borsalino Export Qualität "Qualità Superiore" "Cescosca" "Palladio", date stamped 3/19/59. The "Palladio" Felt color is fantastic. and the very pliable Felt has a great hand. The "Export Qualität" designation was added in the mid 1950. I found this Soft Felt back around 2010.

Thanks Mark. I apologize not tobe in touch on your previous quote, but it was a really mess!
I see you have a second Italian name. Do you know where your ancestors come from? :)
Daniele, my paternal grandfather was born in Varese Ligure, a comune about 50 kilometers east of Genoa. My maternal grandfather was born in Barrafranca, in the Province of Enna, Sicily. My mother and father were born, respectively, in Chicago, Illinois, and Stockton, California.

Thank you, Robert. Still a bit cold over here, but some sunshine today at least. It's getting to be time for some warmer days to show off the lighter felts and straws. You have a headstart there. Looking fine.
Thank you Stefan, after one of the wettest winters known, the sunshine does make for a welcome change. But how long will it last?
Lookin' RAZOR sharp there, Robert!
Razor sharp! What a compliment, thank you Mark, it's much appreciated.

Seemed like the Stetsonian needed some air time today. Love this shade of grey. Not exactly a chameleon hat, but it kinda of throws a medium grey in sunshine and an almost greenish shade in lower light

Thanks Mark.
I asked why a significant portion of my family, both my mother and father sides, emigrated to the Americas.
On my mother's side, they made the journey to South America, especially Brazil. We maintained contact until the mid-1970s. Also on my mother's side, some emigrated to the US (New York I think), and as a child, I remember the letters and packages with various items arriving at my grandfather's house. On my father's side, they left for various countries in South America. We still have contact, especially with Argentina.

Every now and then I help keep Italian hatmaking alive in its lesser-known form here.
We're talking about Monza and its age-old tradition of hatmaking.
This time I found a couple of hats, leftovers, that speak to the Lombardy city's final production period.

Today I'll show you a typical Italian product of medium-quality hatmaking: a blend of fur and wool.
London Monza B.jpg

The hat has a magnificent felt in color and texture, just a little too much shellac to maintain the feel of an English hat.

Yes, it's a faux English hat, but with a typically Italian shape and finish.

Here it is, and this time I've stuck to my resolution to only buy hats in my size, even though I still have some regrets because some were interesting but practically unwearable.

See you soon for the next one.
