I decided for my first post back after my Mom’s unexpected passing last week I would go with this hat she bought me for my birthday a few years back. As was normally the case she would ask me what I wanted for my birthday and I would generally say “oh I don’t know” or “I don’t need anything” but this particular time I said I had been looking at this hat on eBay. A few days later this beauty showed up at my door.

Biltmore Millennium Collection - Navy Blue
Made in Canada
5 inch crown as shaped
1 5/8 ribbon
3 inch brim with 1/4 bound edge

This was one of the first hats that when I opened the box, I was floored at how beautiful it was. It was also though my first wider brimmed hat at 3 inches and I could not get a feel for how to wear it... or what to do with the brim. As a result it went unworn and stays in its box... only to take it out and admire it from time to time. I had considered moving it along. Obviously now I am glad I did not do that and this one will stay with me as a treasured memory from my mom.

Knox Superfine Homburg - Chocolate Brown
5 3/4 Crown
2 inch Copper/brown grosgrain Ribbon
2 1/2 brim front/back - 2 1/4 sides - 5/8 binding

When @BobHufford tipped me off to this hat, from just an image of it’s dusty top, he said “This Might be something” I will say with full certainty I believe it is to me anyhow. And I will also give it a little story to go along with it.

The very last conversation I had with my mom before she passed last week... was a simple text from her asking what do you want for your birthday. To which I replied. “Hmm.. I don’t know” I had no idea she was even sick or that this would be our last “conversation” This hat had kind been in limbo with somewhat delayed shipping for a couple weeks... And I really had no idea what to expect I would find. On the day she passed... the day after my birthday... the box With this hat arrived at my door. Now being that my mother is forever known for being late... but NEVER missing anything. I have decided this is the last birthday present from my mom. And WOW is it beautiful! Thank you Mom. I love it! And thank you Bob for playing a part in making this happen.

Great hat, Joe! Love the colors!
The story is so sad, but I’m happy you’ve found a way to make it work as a tribute to your beautiful Mom.

Thank you my friend. How are you and your parents doing?
We are fine. Thanks for asking.
I’m fully recovered other than an occasional cough, but Mom and Dad are still dealing with lingering minor symptoms; lethargy weakness and coughing.
My Dad got it first by going to a restaurant to meet a cousin he hadn’t seen in years. Before that he hadn’t been anywhere for months, or since the beginning of the lockdown for fear of catching the virus. It only took two and a half days for Mom and I to show symptoms after catching it from him. Very contagious when living around each other.

Scary how contagious it is. And how Easy you Can slip up and let Your guard down. That is good to hear you all are doing better. My Dad and Sister are finally starting to feel a bit better physically.

‘Roo leather for burgers at the pit yesterday - complete with fresh herb and toasted cumin buns cooked on the barbecue. These were so good!
Today it’s the same hat for Texan Ninja ribs - I made a Texas style dry rub and decided this morning to change things up a bit. I dry fried some sansho (literally mountain pepper), ground it up and added it to the rub. Sansho has a pungent fruity flavour and a different kind of spiciness that numbs your mouth and lips.
If they’re as good as I think they’ll be I might have to patent the name & start selling the rub!

We don’t get to see you in straw often. Looking good!
Thanks, Bill. If the weather we're having this past week keeps up I'm going to need more of them!

Cannot go wrong with that one, Max.

Thanks, Stefan! I'd like to say keeping up with my 1- and 4-yr old keeps me young at heart, but by the end of the day it's usually just exhaustion.

Another nice straw from you, and a color coordinated tie to boot. Then again, I wouldn't expect anything less from you.
Thanks, Jonathan. 1 and 4 years olds eh? The grey hair should kick in soon;)

Wearing my Resistol Hi Sierra again today. It’s my first day back to work after four weeks off.

Another Brent Black Montecristi for some errands today.

A work of art; let's hope the Ecuadorians keep producing them.

Good afternoon, all!
Locked up, but content to wear my Churchill Milan while keeping watch of the pond. This is a 24 hour operation!!

It's GREAT to see y'all!!!
Looking good, Charlie. And be vigilant; you never know what might rear its head out of the waters.

No flies on a Sunbody hat! Oh! Wait up :)

There's room in that pic for a photobombing horse, but I guess there were no takers this time:)

Hey folks,!
This Stratoliner has been a frequent flier as of late. Pun intended.

The color goes well with the thick coastal fog blanketing my little town.
Have a great day!
That's what you get for flying too high, John: you end up in the clouds. Great hat.

I missed out on a Stetson Vintage 3X Beaver Open Road Size 7 1/2 Long Oval by $2.76, and 46 seconds the other night, but this Portis OR clone was plenty nice to wear to my local beach today. The felt is a beaver blend, and is light enough to take a dry bash, and wasn't too hot even though a fur hat on a tropical beach is a bit idiosyncratic.

That's one we don't see you wear too often, David. It deserves some headtime for sure!

The whole package is summer all over, Perry. Well done!

Such an odd summer... I'm afraid not enough time or occasion to get all my straws out for the wearing they deserve. For those of you who enjoyed the NY Times article on the making of Montecristi hats (it must have made the news on the FL?), here is a lovely example that was woven in Ecuador and sold from a shop in Havana, likely in the 1940s or before.

Thank you for linking that article, Alan. Very enjoyable and great pics. A truly awesome stack of panamas you have on display there as well. Treasures all.

That's some excellent looking felt, Jonathan.

Picking up lunch from my favorite Chinese joint in my first Dalton. Best egg foo on planet Earth.

Oh, and I finally found a mask I can "get behind," so to speak.

I would have expected nothing less, Jim. Both are excellent (can't judge the egg foo, but I'll take your word for it).

Since it’s rather warm this time of year, I thought I needed something to keep me “cool”. So I decided on the VS “Glacier” that some of us were lucky enough to get from Art late last year before his retirement. This pic is about the fifth one I took today, and still doesn’t represent the color of the hat. So I will just say, it’s a very nice grey to very light blue tone felt. It wears so very good. I barely feel it when wearing because the fit is so good. Didn’t mean for this to sound like a review, but can’t help myself. This is such a nice hat.
I tried to get mostly the hat in the pic, as it’s shortly after lunch and decided it would be best if I didn’t show up much in the pic!!

That's a winner there; looking very smooth.
