Dobbs Cross Country

A very neat new arrival. This one came off a tip from @TheOldFashioned.

The Dobbs Cross Country a very thin light weight unlined hat.

This one had a cool back story. It had belonged to a woman who in the 1930s rode in dressage competitions against the men and won! She was a very proud tiny woman who loved to speak of the memories of her great adventures until her passing. This was how she kept the hat shaped and along with a chin strap she had made to use it for riding

I opened up the crown and reshaped it a bit into more of a fedora shape. There of course is a bit of memory from the pork pie shape she had it.. but it did shape fairly well. I’m sure some steam would help.

The crown is 5 3/8
The Ultra thin raw brim is 2 3/4 front 2 5/8 sides.
The grosgrain mid ribbon is 1 inch

And now for the bad news... unfortunately while I was looking under the sweat for the manufacturing tag.... the back half of the sweat popped its stitching. While the sweat was very soft and malleable.. This potentially 80 year old sweat is Almost paper thin and tore at the stitches like a zipper. The back side of the sweat was powdery. So I guess this one will need a new sweat at some point.

What a great hat Joe. Love the story but I’m glad You ditched the chinstrap! LOVE the navy blue. Looks much better the way you’ve shaped it. It is blue isn’t it? Or is it black....

Joe, Thank you! Great find with the Dobbs "Cross Country"! It wears great too! Sorry about the sweatband but that happens occasionally. I had an early 1950s Echter Borsalino sweatband shrivel up while wearing it on a hot day.

You know it’s funny. As I was brushing out of the hat decades of dust. I started to see bits of what looked like red clay appearing on the surface. As I kept working my way around it kept popping up. I was thinking it must be coming from under the surface. Then as I handled it more there was more and more... looked like I must have been eating Cheetos... I soon realized it was the underside of the sweat disintegrating.

Great looking Whippet Michael !

Good Morning Fellas.

Any ideas on this Churchill Panama ? Got it for dirt cheap on shopgoodwill. I liked the colorful band, thinking it would be cool for the beach or pool, but man, what a crazy brim on this thing. Just a big floppy mess. Took me a lot of time and steam just to get it like this, and don’t know if it really fits the hat. It’s not supposed to be a girl’s sun hat is it ?

I think the brim looks pretty good the way you have it shaped. Might need to get some straw hat stiffener if it won't hold.
