What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Afternoon folks. I headed out for a jaunt about the neighborhood after a couple of Zoom Mtg.'s. I picked the Stetson Whippet off the rack. Same one I wore last evening. It is a "new to me" hat. Quarantined, white gas'd, steamed and blocked the hat was ready to wear. Yesterday I wore the hat proudly. Today the same. Why the paragraph, because I believe it is blue not gray.

This afternoon I was seeking a medium gray or dark gray hat to go for my jaunt. Out I went. When I got home and wiped my brow and the leather sweat I noticed the felt color. It is blue. Unusual. I pulled out a different gray Whippet to compare. It is "blue."

This Whippet has a 2.25" brim and the medium gray Whippet a 2.5 " brim. They have similar liners. The sweat markings are a bit different. I will have to do a more digging as to the age of the hats.

Was I fortunate and found a "rare" blue Whippet? Or is it a gray that shows it's blue heritage? I will try again in direct sunlight tomorrow. Tonight is overcast and high humidity. (Rained for much of the day.)

The hats wear and look different to my eye. The crown height measure the same. When you bring the hats to open crown the blocking appears to be the same. The snap of the brim begins at the same place. Is the difference just a quarter of an inch of brim on a side? Amazing.

It is fun to be curious about a hat's felt color after the crazy meetings that I went through today.

This week I will feature J. Hückel´s Söhne Soft Felt Hats. J. Hückel´s Söhne was nationalized as Tonak after 1945.

J. Hückel´s Söhne "Flexible", 58cm, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim with Curl 2 1/4 inches, probably 1930s. The felt is very light weight and very pliable so easily dry creases. The off-white wide sweatband, gilded liner logo, liner piping, and barbed hat cord are all fantastic.

[The Shoe]

Worked from home today and wearing a $1.99 hat from Shop Goodwill to break it in. It’s a cheaper Resistol straw, a George Strait model, but still about $125 new and this looks never worn.

Still not sure how I look in the big brim Westerns, but for a $1.99 I figured I would experiment with it. The Wife likes it.....

Thanks Brent. Any advice on the brim shape since you are the Big Brim Western Master ? It came with the sides really high up and close in to the crown and the front bent way down squared off. Not a fan of that look, so opened up with steam to where I think it’s pretty close. Still needs a little work on the front.

I’m not the master at anything.
I like the hat and if it were mine I’d lower the bumpers, but it looks good to me.

Guatemalan theme on the daily Corona Crawl today with my SunBody Guatemalan palm straw, a Guatemalan hand beaded hat band, along with a hand loomed Ikat fabric Guatemalan Shirt. The trade winds were back today at a brisk clip, but the SunBody is heavy enough not to end up in the surf. I wore a hickory stripe cotton mask from Monsivais, but didn't really need it as there was no on around on the coastal path or the beach. There were hardly any surfers as well, so I swam out right in front of the life guard tower, way pasts the breakers, and floated over the 8 foot waves.

The trade winds were back today at a brisk clip, but the SunBody is heavy enough not to end up in the surf. I wore a hickory stripe cotton mask from Monsivais, but didn't really need it as there was no on around on the coastal path or the beach. There were hardly any surfers as well, so I swam out right in front of the life guard tower, way pasts the breakers, and floated over the 8 foot waves.

My 30 days of hats would not be complete without an homburg entry. Hence.. an appearance by the Lord Kent “Custom Made” Beaver 15 Homburg as it is currently my only such hat. While as Stefan and Steve both taught me you can “dress down” the homburg with side dents... I do still prefer to wear this hat to dress up a bit for ‘special occasions’. Today that special occasion will be to celebrate Day 28 of the 30 Days to 30 hats. With this entry we have now completed 4 weeks! Hooray!!!

A couple cool details on this hat for me... the little flyer shoved into the sweatband for the hat store Joes Hat Corner.... and initials on the sweat that matched my grandfather’s

Late 60s Stetson Playboy. The condition and felt color and pinkish liner is what made me pull the trigger on this BIN. I’d much rather it be from the 40s/50s, but it’ll fill a hole in my small collection nicely.
It may have been one of the last models before giving the Playboy name the axe? Ive always imagined ole Hugh and his well adorned mansion had something to do with that.

[The Shoe]

Took a walk around the pond to get some exercise this morning. I wore my leather Henschel western hat. This one stands out in Japan where you’re lucky to see a western hat ever. But having purchased a resistol, it now feels remarkably understated.

I met some fellow foreigners on my walk.

The foreign turtles have taken over most of the waterways in Japan, meaning it’s now rare to see an indigenous turtle.

This expectant mother is a fellow antipodean. She’s in for a disappointment, though. Being the only one of her kind, these eggs won’t be hatching.
