Sorry for the late response but in all honesty i had no idea how best to respond to your extremely flattering compliment.
Just to be mentioned in the same sentence as Alan and Eric’s hat collection is an honor reserved for few hat guys. When i think of other members, over the years and their collection i blush at any comparisons. Thank you kindly but you have a much higher opinion of my hats then i do. No mistake, i do have some good hats, many many here do, but at the end of the day i’m just a guy with some hats. The others mentioned and those of years past are/were experts in all things hats far beyond the understanding and comprehension of most of us. And thank God they are. Me/we are just privileged to be able to see and learn from their knowledge and generosity.

As far as “that day” when others have to deal with the overwhelming task of what to do with Pop’s stuff...i shudder to think. I’m afraid mine will have no choice but to put my endeavors in black plastic bags and hopefully go to Goodwill and not put them on the curb! I do need a plan to address this, thank you.
So...what’s your size?? Lol kinda

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Bowen. Wouldn’t it be be a travesty if these hats simply went to Salvation Army, etc? My hats, I dearly love, but none of mine would be considered in mint condition, or having posterity significance, or provenance backed historically coveted artifacts.
As you’ve stated there are many here at the Lounge, past/present, whose hats should be left to a special someone or some chosen entity who will care for them, or maybe thoughtfully preserved for the future? idk. But something...worthy.
Bowen if you disclaim your collection as worthy, then my hats just took another nose dive in value, for sure!
If I were you, Eric or Alan and others (you know who you are) I would no doubt have a pre and post death hat plan set in place.
If they were simply given to someone who thinks like me they’d be worn with care, but wear them pretty much everywhere I would! And that would not be the best thing to do with rare, mint condition 20s/30s/40s/ 50s hats that can never be replaced with cursory eBay searches.
However, Bowen, if you insist and wanna write me into your will my hat size is....

As I a now retired gentleman that has acquired much stuff over the course of a lifetime I am at the point of wondering what is my responsibility. My wife, younger than I, is likely to outlive me and get stuck with the massive task of disposing of my 'collections'....hats of which are but a part. The secret I imagine is to begin shedding just prior to one's demise but the bitch of it all is discerning when exactly that is to be.

I doubt i’ll have time to post “Elizabeth i’m coming to join you”!
Had the opportunity a couple weeks ago...but grabbed my bottle of Nitrostat instead.
Now...back to hats today for the living.

I bought a sweet wide brim BIN Knox Fifteen with gills today! Can’t wait to hold it and of course sport around under it. Couldn’t pass up a $55 50s Knox. No way, no how, not ever!

On my office wall is a cartoon of a big fat businessman, chomping a Churchillian cigar, descending the steps of hell, carrying a huge wicker basket, stuffed full of money. The devil is saying, "Congratulations, you are the first ever to bring it with you. Now what are you going to do with it?"

Have you ever been in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. My wife likes me to ask before posting a photo of her. On the "How do folks react," thread I put up this photo of us at a wedding last Saturday, along with a number of favourable reactions and compliments that we received.



Tina, my missus, only saw the photo today, although she had said that she was ok with me posting it. "You can't see the intricate hat detail," she whinged, when seeing the picture for the first time. I reminded her that I seek approval before posting and that's why I only put up one photo. So to keep the peace here's the hat detail, and in the background you can see Fiona, the milliner. We collected the hat from her house, she was still recovering from surgery and not able to open her shop for a while. Just in case of a further potential potential domestic, the other photos are of the matching feather that went in my hat ribbon. For the link to our day at the wedding click here.

You both look grand, and the detail on the hat, and clothing, is very smart indeed!
