What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Well, quite an eventful day. All I planned to do was leave a message at the Doctor's office about needing more meds. Showed up without an appointment. Next thing I knew, they were doing X-Rays and pulling the pins out of my hand! Doctor C. said they were doing more harm than good, letting in the infections. It feels good to be free of the pins, but wow, I'm in quite a bit of pain now. Combination of the infection and the trauma pulling out of the pins. Still have to wear my brace, but so much better. Thanks for all the good thoughts! Bonus picture of the hat I'm wearing to the theater tonight for rehearsal. English Penn-Craft stingy in a velour finish.

That's good news and a cool hat. An English Penn-Craft is a new one on me.

Hello Reddy Kilowatt, long time since I've seen you!

The brim ribbon is wider on the bottom. You can only see the stitching from the top.

Making gills is easy. Keeping them aligned, straight, and tight while sewing them on is a whole 'nother ball of wax. I suggest not drinking before attempting it.

This is my first set of gills.

I got better.

I am going to camp out on my surgeon's doorstep this morning. The infection in my hand is back, don't know why. Incredible pain and really gross. I assume they will give me another round of antibiotics. Grab and go hat is the early 1960s Cavanagh Thirty. Sinatra's favorite brand. There are images of Frank and the rest of the Rat Pack wearing this exact hat. View attachment 191061 View attachment 191062 View attachment 191063 View attachment 191064

An easy grab & go stingy to embrace, Mike! I hope you grabbed gently... Please take care of that hand; and don’t pick at it!

Thanks for the good advice and instructional pictorials, Fruno. I’m sure I can keep from getting an SUI (sewing under the influence of alcohol), but keeping the gills tight and straight will be the challenge, sober or not. However, I’m up for a good challenge.
Was the gill work on the Mallory yours, too, or was that original?

That sounds good, Red. Sometimes removing all that hardware will reduce irritation. You should be on your way now.

That hat has really grand features. Sharp hat!

Seeing all your glorious gill ribboned fedoras has inspired me to try my hand at doing a modified version of it on one of my Cavanaghs that I found the other day. Right now it needs a new sweat sewn in and hat band. A smoke grey ribbon will look good on the 2 1/2 inch brimmed Cav. Anyway, when I get done with it I’ll post a pic, but I’m sure it’ll not measure up to any of your gilled beauts. Love your collection!

Thank sir. I really enjoy the variety of ribbon treatments that show up on this thread. You can not have enough gill, and any other ribbon treatments. Their is a thread about "special" ribbon treatments that is well worth a gander. It showcases some gorgeous ribbon treatments. Thanks again - best wth your project.

Glad your hand is improving. I have had many pins and still have some in my hands and an ankle. Glad they work, but I agree they are a pain. Pain in many ways. In my case going through airport security can be comical. Symathetic, wow, shocking face and inevitable questions are my experiences. You are the tough man, be strong and get well.
