Unfortunately, I see my droid didn't capture the inner, rectangular telescope (I refuse to call it a rectascope --- for reasons that should be obvious) this putty like felt made almost obligatory.

Was the Borsa welted before? I've ripped, then ironed one welt out. Ermatinger's book made me think I could develop the skills of a hatter. Apparently welted hats hadn't taken off in 1910. He never mentions them. They have go bye-bye for any full reblock, don't they?

Thanks HR. The brim was never welted. It was always a bound brim. It started out as a 3 1/8 wide brim. I lost only an 1/8 in the size up and got lucky that the brim loss was even all around. That saved me the trouble of trimming the brim and rebinding it. All I had to do to the brim was to reflange it.

Blocking only effects the crown and there’s no reason to need do anything with the brim. I’ve had hats with both under and over welted brims reblocked and the re-flanged without the hatter removing the welt.

My only 7X CB Stetson. I got it cheap because of some moth damage and the SB was in poor shape. Thanks to @Rockwater I corrected most of the moth damage with a needle. I replaced the SB so the collector value is diminished, but I don't care. I hope I can find another sometime.

That's interesting. Scientific Hat Finishing and Refurbishing makes it sound like a rounding jack will come into play after reblocking to change size.
I guess I can go ahead and do some blocking I've had on the back burner. The welt will not effect the flange block either? Like when I press my pants right over the seams?

If you are just reblocking to the original size it shouldn’t change the brim or require a rounding jack. If you are drastically changing the hat when blocking (sizing up, etc.) the brim can become uneven in width and then the rounding jack is needed. It’s also used if you just want a shorter width brim. If you’re trimming the brim, you either remove the welt or cut the brim inside the welt.

I’ve never really reflanged a brim the right way so I can’t address how they do it with welted brims. I just got a velour Borsalino with an over-welted brim back from VS and the brim was reflanged without removing the welt.
