Conventional wisdom seems to indicate yes on all counts. Tough to tell if he ever did anything to throw a game as player or manager, though. I've never seen anybody accuse him of not trying to win.

I was a snot-nose kid and he and the rest of the Reds were playing a charity basketball game. I had the moxie to walk up behind him when he was sitting on the bench during the game and ask for his autograph. He gave me a dirty look, but he signed.

OH, and so we don't get too far off track...

Max the rule of a lifetime ban for gambling goes back to the throwing of the World Series. The books kept by Rose's bookie prove that he bet on baseball. It has never been released as far as I know, if those books prove he bet against his own teams as a manager. No one has accused him of throwing games but he certainly would have known the odds his teams faced. When this all came to light MLB Commissioner Giamatti gave him a lifetime ban in ~1989. This is not a court of law. There have been 3 Commissioners since Giamatti, any one of which would have likely lifted the ban if Rose had only come clean but he steadfastly maintains his position, ignoring the obvious. It's too late now; the dye has been cast.

Yes, I see now that the button is in a different place than before. I think the whole thing slid off when I turned the hat upside down a few days ago. I guess I put it back wrong, but I just fixed it. Thanks for noticing.

Anyway, here's the inside. It's had its sweatband replaced, but the liner and size tag look original.

Starting to notice that just might be your signature crease. It sure shows the felt.

More and more of my hats are morphing into diamonds. I love the way the light plays off the peaks and valleys.

And yes, the ribbon color and contrasting edging, as well as the creamy light green pea color of the felt, all sucked me in like a Hoover on high.

If I'm remembering correctly, he held out for years that he never bet on baseball. There was a lot of steam moving to get him into the baseball HOF in some fashion or another, until he finally admitted to betting on baseball, at which point he pretty much lost all credibility. The last I heard, he still says he never bet against the Reds. At this point though it's really hard to take his word for it.

I found out the snow plow hadn't refilled my driveway with snow, so it was happy days.
