What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

When I was a young man, I used to love sitting in bars writing poetry. I have been sober for quite a long time (and am incredibly thankful for my sobriety) and tonight is the first time I have actually sat in a bar in over a dozen years.

This is also my first time to ever have a mocktail, and I must say I am surprised how yummy it is. Who'd have thought watermelon, cordial and egg whites could taste so great.

The weather continues to allow the Fed IV. I randomly discovered a tiny little clothes shop in a back alley today whose owner makes her own clothes and I loved it. I purchased three items from her - I am including some photos below - and she threw in a freebie just because she's awesome.

Happy Tuesday from Bangkok to all you hat lovers. I am including the poem I wrote at this jazz bar below the photos. I write an awful lot of doggerel, but even bad poetry - like b movies - can have a charm.

Disappointment.
I sit over my virgin watermelon cordial with egg white
(for the foam)

and think of you.
I missed you tonight,
too late, too impatient,
too fragile and too
impetuous ...

still trying to sort out this BTS/RTS/MRT situation...
(oh the foam!)
They are not the same, damn you ticket counter seller with the crazy good English and still unable to explain that I need a different ticket for each damn one!
(foaming...)

So instead of in your arms, here I am in this empty jazz bar
waiting for the band.

The night is sleepy.
Nobody gets dressed up
on a Tuesday...
not even in Bangkok.

Got a little cleaning and steaming done on the new mystery Stetson last night. Figured why not trot it out in the sun this morning. Heavy enough felt that it should be reasonably warm for 22 degrees outside. Not terrible for a $9 Goodwill hat.

Going to replace the hardened / ripped sweatband and do some ribbon updating at some point. Thinking about a 5/8" ribbon with a Campaign bow. Maybe even a ribbon edge binding. ( just because I can lol)

Still curious about what it originally was. Dont know that Ive ever seen a Stetson with stiff western weight felt on a 3" raw edge brim Fedora with a Center dent up top. Stetson logo on the sweat is the only marking left. With the fake leather sweatband Im guessing its a fairly recent lid from 90's or early 2000's. If anyone has any idea what it was Im all ears. Its destined to be a " wear and dont worry about it" hat.

Green Blazer black trousers 002.JPG
mason black.jpg

Tina had an outpatient appointment today, they are keeping a check on her heart surgery. A bottle green fedora is my usual choice with this blazer, but getting ready to take the lady to her appointment, and seeing me in the trousers that she had made for me, she said: "Wear the black Mason." Who am I to argue?

Her appointment was at Salisbury District Hospital, being Salisbury there's a pile of rocks that attract much attention.

But following her appointment it wasn't Stonehenge she wanted to see. The lady had her sights set on Franklins.

There might be a new pair of trousers in my wardrobe before too long.

Happy New Year... first hat photo of the day for 2025 is this Stetson Nutria Quality. Likely later 1930s, the felt quality is working man thick and rustic but the hat is finished impeccably and shows virtually no wear save a few moth nibbles. This hat came to me in its original box from FL member Zetwal who had an eye for great finds. All the best, Alan.

It started snowing down here @ Rock Bottom Sunday morning and didn't quit for over 24 hours, dumping at least 10" of snow. As soon as the storm passed I got my tractor out & plowed my driveway as good as possible but wasn't satisfied with the job so this morning I hit it again... with a renewed sense of urgency. There was a hat scheduled for delivery today you see !! Not just any old hat either. I think this one might be something special but I really don't know. Fawn color felt with brim edge binding that is wider on the top than the underside and a chocolate color 1-3/4" grosgrain ribbon . The crown is 4-1/2" as shaped and the brim is 2-3/4" wide. Made expressly for Davidson's men's wear, Cleveland, Ohio. Not much else to go but this appears to be a very well made hat.
* This morning after I finished plowing the driveway I put the tractor back in the barn and as I was walking back to the house here came the mailman's jeep up the driveway !! I love it when a plan comes together. Time for a hot cup of coffee and a little time by the woodstove.

Maybe somebody here can recognize the brand based on the internal label. Great looking hat though, and I like that stone hearth.

My second post on this friendly community! Thank you for the kind welcome.

Now, this was my hat for the day. Just a normal workday in Copenhagen, but the rain was pouring down.

Luckily my Mayser fedora managed quite well and the inside remained entirely dry. Unlike my feet.

Fun little trivia. Several Scandinavian kings as well as the author H.C. Andersen bought hats from the very same old store where I acquired my Mayser.

Good to see the Mayser is holding up as well as its retailer Petitgas.

Good to see some love for the black hat, Robert. Well done Tina for suggesting it.
