Me coming back from seeing King Crimson last night. Incredible show. The Zappa band (several of Frank's sidemen touring under the auspices of the Zappa Family Trust) opened. Just a great evening of excellent music.

Hats & bikes....does not get any better than that. If I had used a ton of stiffener and a chin strap you could wear it as a bike helmet and combine the two worlds!!!!

Curious as to what you think about Optimo, Dave. I’ve had a few through my hands and haven’t been really impressed. I’ve had these older hats as well as the newer all beaver hats with the gold liner. They aren’t bad, but I was expecting something exceptional. Would you mind sharing your thoughts?

Brent, To be honest, it's OK. It is from 2007 and I have been told that the felt quality on the newer ones is much better.
I paid under $100 for it in unworn condition. So it was worth checking out.
I think it is much better quality than any modern $100-$200 hat I have. But not better than most of my vintage hats.
If I were to pay full price, I would most likely go to another custom maker or vintage.
Maybe a little underwhelmed.

Janyška "Praga", 58cm, NOS condition, probably late 1930s early 1940s. Janyška & Cie. was started in the 1920s in Valašské Meziříčí – Krásno about 25 km from Nový Jičín (JHS, AP, BB). Janyška & Cie. was a Czech company based on Austrian Hat making tradition. This hat is from my May 2016 NOS Czech find.

Thanks, Dave. The Optimos that were briefly mine seemed well-made and decent…I guess I just had unrealistic expectations based on price and exclusivity. I appreciate your candor.

Thanks, Marcel. Have you given a western a try? I started my hat journey with an almost exclusive focus on homburgs and have branched out from there.
