Thanks... looks like it is gonna need a good steaming to get it back in shape as the guy shoved it in a small box and the brim is a little wonky. Also the front edge of has a weird bent crease right near the front.

It looks to have good bones and I’m sure you’ll whip it into shape. It’s a lovely hat.

You will find that hats can be quite resilient!! Lots of brushing and a litte steam can work miracles!! You showed us that with that nice Borsalino!

Thanks for the votes of confidence guys... brushing and steam can do wonders.. and sometimes when there is something it can’t overcome those little defects just become the personality of the hat.

I'm no expert, but I don't think water and most straw hats go together well if the plan is to keep the hats for a while. I do have a few ball caps that could probably withstand a good dunking though.

Whew! You may have just saved me from making a big mistake. I read about dunking and shaping straw hats and thought this might work for my old Stetson. I've tried the steaming method several times, but nothing seems to work. The bring continues to look "wavy," as if it were a hobo's hat!

Listen, I know very little about straw hats. I've read comments from members here whose straw hats responded very poorly to having been rained upon, and others whose hats survived similar treatments well. And I know Sunbody hats respond well to water. Other than that...

Have you tried contacting Stetson to see what they advise?

I ordered a metallic silver bucket hat that "left the carrier facility" in China on May 16. That is the last entry on the tracking page. Obviously this is the current "new normal", so I am not worried.

As a general rule, when I see the sweatband change from a tan/medium brown to a dark chocolate brown color, I see an early 1960's hat. I'm sure there are cases where I'm wrong about this, but in the hats I've seen that's what I've experienced.

That is not to say these early 60's hats are inferior. On my Sovereign Twenty there's a leaning toward stingy brim, but the felt is fantastic and the hat came with the Mode Edge (aka Cavanagh Edge). You just don't see that kind of quality in modern hats.

This one shipped yesterday. This is the replacement for the one that got stolen just minutes before the mailman came to pick it up.

Can Michael Gannon make a hat or what?

Thanks Doug... I was getting an early 60s vibe as well. The shorter brim. Plastic liner tip. But Also an oil skin liner behind the sweat. The felt is great. And being a twenty combined with that ribbon made me go for it.

Oh me as well... there was a bit there I was only interested in a hat if it had a Cav edge. Broadened my horizons a little since then though.

tomorrow I will brush it out and play with the shape some... but it may be this one’s personality might be this sort of slouchy shape. And that will be just fine with me.
