What hat are you waiting for today?

My first felt hat in over 40 years, a used Akubra I just picked up on Ebay fairly cheaply. I just love everything about it, the proportions, brim, the crown, the colour, all of it.

It will allow me to learn various things about Akubra hats, including their sizing.

(I wore a felt cowboy hat all through High School, Silverbelly with a telescope crown, but I've not worn one since I graduated in 1975.)

I'm a little frustrated, and being eager doesn't add to my anxiety. The hat I ordered two days ago, scheduled for delivery today has been stalled, somehow. My tracking software says it left San Diego, arrived and departed Los Angeles, made it to Indiana, then on to New Jersey, where it's been sitting "waiting for item." It's now scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I know I shouldn't concern myself, especially since I ordered a hat that's going to take several weeks to arrive, but doggone it, I want my new hat!

Patience Grasshopper. Just wait until you order your first custom bespoke hat, that takes months. This is your training exercise for this version of your future.

I know the feeling. One of the hats I ordered from Australia sat in customs at Los Angeles International Airport for four days for no apparent reason other than they hadn't gotten around to it yet. Once they cleared it, it was on my doorstep within six hours. o_O Patience is a virtue I've yet to master, especially when dealing with incompetence. But I'm trying. :D

I play Irish music, and play the Uilleann pipes. The best makers have very long wait lists. Some of the best makers, when their wait list got to 10 years, closed their books.

One maker who closed his book when it got to 10 years said "I don't know if I'm still going to want to be doing this in 10 years."

Typically you put a 50% deposit down to get your spot on the wait list, a sizeable amount of money due to a Full Set of Uilleann pipes costing anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000.

A few years ago the fellow who was perhaps the highest-regarded maker suddenly passed away. His 10-year wait list had a large number of people who had each put down several thousand dollars.

In my 40 years of playing Irish music I've never waited less than 9 months for an instrument, and as long as 6 years.

This makes waiting 3 months for an Akubra seem very prompt indeed!

Argh! My new hat just arrived! It's everything I wanted it to be. Except the right size.

Oh sorry, let me say that it's the size I ordered: Large (7-1/4 - 7-3/8). And I positively swim in it.

So, alas and alack, I'm going to send it back and exchange it for a medium. More days to wait... :(

That is a bummer.

What struck me most, when I visited a local hat shop (Village Hat Shop) was the amazing discrepancies in sizes from brand to brand. I'm a hat newbie and I didn't know it was that all over the map. I usually wear a 60 or 61, 7 1/2 or 7 5/8. Depending on brand, I found hats that fit in Medium, Large, XL, and XXL. Wow.

That's been my (limited) experience, too. After trying on several hats in different sizes, I figured measuring my hat size would be the best. I guess that turns out to be a bit of a guess as well.

I guess that's why people pay extra for custom-made. When I lived overseas, I had suits custom made for me, and they fit like nothing else since!

It is always best to stay away from S/M/L/XL, a hat that fits looks better on your noggin.

You will definitely like the color DD. I'll look forward to seeing what you do with it.
Thanks Jack, it's a color I have been admiring on the lounge, including yours. The lack of nice hats to look at yesterday, along with the last day of free shipping from Hats direct, pushed me over the edge! It probably won't be a surprise what I do with it.
