So far in the duration of my leather jacket hobby I have had jackets come and go, some were great,some are awsome and some of them never came. During the process of my experience I have surely learned that having the desire for a leather jacket that is bad ass isn't satisfied when you get one.( its true) The problem is that even though I have one or ten and I see another one that I don't have, it activates that desire to satisfy my desire, yet if I get that jacket my desire remains. What am I ? That has this unsatisfying desire.
I wonder sometimes..... does this hobby enrich my life? Is it adding value to me or anyone? Am I wasting time an energy? Not to mention money, accumulating an trading mens wear that makes me temporarily feel good when I put it on because it looks cool. I spend hours a year storming through the internet looking for vintage jackets, new jackets, rare jackets, that i may have not seen, scouring flee Bay, tfl, and stores, looking for a deal in my size, or just an idea for a new jacket, or someone's experience or opinion about a jacket, I buy, I post, i sell, i comment, I check notifications, I recieve jackets, i send off jackets; routinely shuffling through the post office lines, filling out addresses, sending tracking info, sending money to members an makers, sitting around the house in a jacket, reading, writing, waiting, looking, watching, .....possibly wasting. And I wonder what will be the end of all these things

Jacketeering activates your ancestral hunting instinct. The thrill of the chase, the short lived gratification and immediate necessity to move on to the next prey. We are all still quite primitive in essence. It’s fun though.

I’ve had a jacket from The Few on my wishlist for a couple weeks. I wanted to byy the goatskin half belt. I waited, thought about it, waited and eventually didn’t click buy. Now it’s not for sale anymore

I am sure that if I had bought it I would have felt good for a moment but then I would have been... why did you buy another one when you haven’t sold the ones that don’t fit you, it’s extra 600-700€ that you shouldn’t spend because you could use those for something more sensible(saving for an apartment, invest in my future or just a pair of shoes I will get more wear out of them) or save because I have a pair of Clinch/Belafonte dress boots ordered.

I’ve realised that I need the rush, I keep purchasing garments I don’t need nor wear in the end. It’s a hoarding problem, it has taken over a full room and closets that weren’t even mine to begin with and just a family extra room. I also despise selling, I don’t like having to take photos, measurements, finding a buyer, pricing the items, packaging, shipping, it all sounds like too much hassle and somehow have trouble thinking anyone would want my stuff.

Both things combined make for s bad combo!

I think that for once I will stick to first selling and then once that is fixed if I still truly want a different jacket to wear I’d purchase one.

The problem is both sides of the coin are attractive. Accumulating and then purging. And starting over. It’s a rush and a gamble. And also a waste of time and money.

New styles, hides, materials, liners and configs. It’s a crack pipe of rocket fuel and adrenaline. I truly envy folks who just buy jackets and are happy and move on.

I’m not one of them. In other words:

nothing is permanent, your hobby is not permanent, your sense is not permanent, your sense of clothes included, so don't invest to much in one area, because then you start losing interest but you still want to convince yourself you like the genre and wanting to continue to be part of it, so you buy more trying to find something rarer, or something new, something wild out your normal sense just to convince you still have the initial hype of the subject while inside you're moving somewhere else and slowly don't really care about the whole thing, happened to me several times and I believe I'm just an everyday standard person, so everybody else might feel the same at some points of their lives.

to me now, having unfulfilled dream semi eternally, is what making me stay interested in the subject longer

LOL. This is probably very true. Hanging around here is like throwing a match into a 50 gallon drum of gasoline and expecting to be able to slow cook a piece of meat over the flame.

All fair points. Moderation can't hurt. If you feel the hobby is dominating in a way that isn't helpful, pursue other things for a while. As Norman Bates observed in Psycho - a hobby is meant to help pass the time, not fill it.
