Ha. This cat is nowhere near a bass "player." Its why I went into the biz end of things. Just got a good ear for playing straight 1/4/5 Texas/Chicago style blues. Got tired of the night life so I turned a hobby into a biz.

I spent much of my life as a commercial photographer specializing in corporate image and architecture. My first photo studio (1978) coincided with the decision, painful, to leave the University of Italian Modern Literature at half way with excellent results. I had commercial partners during the years to fulfill commitments in advertising pictures as: clothes and accessories, wines and food mainly. I confess I did not like the twilight in the studio all the day.
I started taking pictures as a teenager, and my gift for the high school degree, requested and received, was a professional camera (Minolta 101 B). I have spent my money at that time in books, newspapers and films and vinyl and some money also to become a rock star (singer), maybe just in lifestyle
I started as a professional photographer in an advertising company in the spring of 1977, then I was for twenty-three years, as an independent photographer, in my first study from which I came out in 2001. The moving of my studio was a little sad becuase I took the decison not to have the light equipment and set, so I rented studios of collegues.
I stopped with commercial commitments at the end of 2010 when a world , the analog one, with appurtenances, died definitively.
Now I do the middle-aged Italian gentleman a bit bizarre. I'm specialized since I was a wayward boy

My last position was utility and driver development / support for Sony Tape storage products. Now I am a part time fencing coach (also hat collector ). Fencing (saber) has been a big part of my life. I started back when I was 12 and I have never stopped (high school, NCAA, olympic / world qualifiers, world cups, now veterans age 50-59 / part time coaching).

I'm a newspaper columnist, focusing primarily on politics and social issues in a twice weekly column. I also do a humor column on Mondays. I frankly think it's the greatest gig in the world and I wonder sometimes how I lucked into it. I majored in journalism in the early '80s, worked briefly for UPI in New York City until they were sold in the summer of '82, then covered sports for a small daily in Oklahoma before getting a job as a cop reporter in Las Vegas. Some people love that beat. It just made me depressed. Dead bodies, strange characters and tough-guy cops day after day sort of wore me down. After three years, I jumped at a chance to move to Salt Lake and cover government and politics. I did that for eight years before moving to the editorial pages. In 2010, we suffered huge layoffs. I was the editorial page editor at the time. I somehow survived the layoffs, but new management brought in a new opinion editor. I was asked what I would like to do. That was a cinch. I told them I wanted to write columns full-time, with the world as my beat. They agreed. Now I just have to hope newspapers survive another 10 years, when I can retire.
Most importantly, I've been married to the world's most wonderful woman for 34 years this coming July. We have five great kids and four grandkids so far.
I don't have to wear a hat for my job, but it's become a part of my brand. Because of what I do, I occasionally find myself on air or being asked to speak at functions. I always bring a fedora.

I so much admire those with a regular column who consistently write so well and so clearly. It is an art form not fully appreciated in my view. It would be my wish to reincarnate as a columnist but I probably would have a hard time handling the stress

Retired seven years ago from a municipal police dept. at the age of fifty after twenty five years. I had planned on staying for thirty but after four administrative changes (chief), with an upcoming fifth, I decided I had enough bad memories to last a lifetime and walked away. During my tenure I worked patrol (every shift), traffic (motorcycle cop), bicycle patrol, narcotics, community oriented patrol unit (PR, neighborhood watch and such), street crime unit and detective bureau. For fifteen of the twenty five years I was also assigned to the departments Special Response Unit (SWAT team). Spent six years as the sgt. over that unit.

I usually don't tell folks about what I used to do because it seems most everyone has a "cop" story they want me to hear.

Would that everyone was a newspaper junkie, belfast. That's how I was raised, but the world is changing. I agree it's an art form, and that it is stressful. That's why I indulge in diversions, such as collecting hats.

I teach literature at a college here in Miami. Before that, I was a guitar player in various bands from the time I was fourteen until I was thirty (some of that in the Punk scene in NY), then a speechwriter for a corporate head on Wall Street for four years, then a Compliance Officer, and then I applied for and received a full scholarship for graduate school when I was 38 y.o. Since then I've been teaching, which I really enjoy. Someone asked me recently, though, what I most liked about teaching, and I replied,"May, June, July, and August." I haven't really thought about retirement yet, but one of these days the administrators and the politicians may drive me away.
