thats a solid look sproily, but i can't imagine how people would receive boaters in Finland.. they'd probably even get an eye in the south of the USA these days. But if the weather gets warm enough, go with it, its only a dead style if no one has the guts to pull it off

This suit is a bit of an enigma to me, actually. It was an evilBay find from September or so of last year. The label lacks a date, and the suit lacks a union tag.

This vintage suit of yours is one of the best I've ever seen, period. My guess is that it's from the late '40s; a slightly conservative 'English drape' model, as opposed to the boxier, wider-shouldered 'Bold Look.'

Really, that late? Huh... never would've guessed! But the style works for me, so I'm happy either way. Glad to know it's in such high esteem!

Wow, that sounds like some adventure... farming in the West of Ireland! How on earth did that come about?

Well i've been doing farmwork in ireland since january. I've been in the middle of nowhere for a month and mostly have been living in wellington boots. But i've been to Galway town and the Gort once or twice, and will be sticking around until May 2nd. I had 0 internet access for the time. It was a good experience, and i've got another month to go at a different farm (i bailed out of the last one because of insufficient food and a bit of mistreatment) I've only brought two suits with me, my grey DB and my black pinstripe. Here's what i've got from my travels at least:

before going out to Galway

And actually doing work, some more work appropriate attire:

You wouldn't expect me to shovel horse manure wearing a suit, although most of the old farmers around here do.the fellow we were working for was crass and not exactly that type, but he had a pocket watch that must have been 150 years old. I held that thing and my jaw nearly dropped when i saw it. The weight of it and the thickness of the pure gold chain..my lord.

I think so. The only indications, if any, are in the lapels and in collar (toward the notch): they're just a slight hair narrower than you'd typically find on an earlier '40s (or '30s) jacket. This very subtle narrowing is often --though certainly not always-- found on late '40s or turn-of-the-'50s three-button jackets.

PadMen...?

As some of you already know, I'm recovering from a bout of food poisoning, so that's taken the wind out of my sails recently. But thankfully, 'before' that hit, I had the chance to get my clobber together and head up to 'The Club' to see a few old friends from a school I once went to. Probably more of a MadMen look than I'm used to..!

In my experience, yes, they must. I don't know when elastic became a common thing with socks, but I've never owned a pair of vintage socks that had any, and they simply won't stay up without garters.

Anon', your vintage socks look smart and excellent because they are taut as a result wearing sock garters. Do you use single or double grips garters?

I like your style Mario, so much that I like to borrow it from time to time. Black and grey are among my favourite colours. Would you mind telling me whether that's a cravat or a necktie tied as a cravat?

Wie immer sehen Sie sehr elegant aus mein Freund.

Vielen Dank! :)

Yes, I really like to go with black/gray combos a lot. Sometimes I only combine different shades of gray. And I obviously like to add some red into the mix. Today's shirt is actually not gray but has a nice beige/cream color. Most of the time I dislike white shirt (on me, that is).

And the red accent is not a tie but a cravat/ascot.
