To say I’m not a fan of Bruce would be a gigantic understatement. Probably about 95% of the time I absolutely can’t stand him. That being said, every so often I get a hankering. Luckily I inherited a bunch of the oldies, and play them through. Only occasionally, but I’m glad that I can. Hope everyone is well. Music is the cure.
A "local" (Ben Miller Band out of Joplin, Missouri) group covers an old sea shanty for the TV soundtrack of "Outsiders". The vocal distortion is achieved by singing through an old telephone handset.
Pretty sure these aren't the exact lyrics Ben is singing (who can tell?):
Oh, poor old Reuben Ranzo,
Ranzo, me boys, Ranzo
Oh, poor old Reuben Ranzo,
Ranzo, me boys, Ranzo
Oh, Ranzo was no sailor
So he shipped aboard a whaler
Oh, Ranzo was no beauty
So he couldn't do his duty
Oh, because he was so dirty
He give him five and thirty
Oh, the skipper's daughter Suzy
Well, she begged her dad for mercy
Oh, she give him wine and water
And a bit more than she ought to
Well, he got his first mate papers
He's a terror to the whalers
Now he's known wherever them whale-fish blow
As the hardest master on the go
Something popped up on my screen this morning about the late McCoy Tyner. He passed in March, I hadn’t even heard until today. Big Mac was the man. One of my favorites in jazz. Don’t think I have time for a real marathon, but I’m getting it started.
