What are Shirt Garters and How Does One Wear Them.

I recently found these on a website. They call them shirt garters, I'm not sure how one would wear them but I figure it has something to do with keeping a shirt tucked in.

What I am wondering is what exactly are these? I have never seen these before, and I would like to know if these can be used with regular shirts or are these made specifically for something like white tie where presentation is extremely important?

I've always thought they came from the days when one size shirt fit all. The shirts all came with extra long sleeves, they'd fit the long armed fellows and the short armed chaps would use the garters to shorten them.

There's a different style that was on Kickstarter, called the "NV: T-Holder". These shirt garters wrap around your thighs to keep your shirt down and have more clips.

Oh so that's what they are for, I've always heard them called shirt stays. The ones that I have seen also are in a "Y" shape.

There's no scale on the photo to show length, but I think these are the shirt garters that attach to the bottom of your shirt at one end, and the sock at the other. Supposed to keep the shirt down and the socks up. The US military still wear them with some dress uniformks, I believe; there's a particular way of running them round the leg so as to avoid painful accidents should the sock end snap loose....

Sleeve garters, I've never seen any type other than the metal sprung-bracelets, which are always circular and don't 'detach' to run flat, if that makes sense.

Jinkies, it's like an upside down sussie belt, for each leg! Looks like it eould be fairly effective, though tbh I've never felt the need of such a device. I do love my sock suspenders, but that's more for a bit of flair than anything.

Cool to see and learn about, but man, life is too complicated in general and getting dressed and ready in the morning already has enough going on that adding all that would overwhelm. Also, it is either something that you get used to wearing over time and don't notice or all that under-architecture would drive one crazy.

Kinda makes sense for modern short hem shirts and low rise trousers if you want to tuck but not for vintage clothes. I mean, shirt tails covered at least your ass if not half of the thighs as well and the trousers came up to the navel. Who would need shirt garters with that set-up?

I think they are used to keep the shirt from billowing up and making that sort of muffin top that happens with lots of movement.

At one time a shirt was considered an undergarment. Only in the most torrid weather conditions would a gentlemen lay aside his coat. But as is always the case, such rules only applied to gentlemen. The rougher sort of man wouldn't even be wearing a collar under similar circumstances.
