I should thank you RBH. I styled my Open Road like that grey one you have. I just haven't figgered out how to smooth it out yet. It was so beat up when I found it, I've been treating it like a baby. Maybe I should just start wearing it, eh? :D

I feel like it's one of those, "Damned if you do, Damned if you don't," situations.

A hat is a hat is a hat. if it's not in a display case, i'm wearing it in rain, snow and other weather.

Otherwise it's not a hat, it's a museum display.

Strictly IMNSHO, o'course.

THANKS Mr. B---

Yes just wear it. You may have to send it out for a 'real' rework. But try some steam and work a small area at a time.
Then again you may find you a better O R and this hat may be your beater.
I try to 'watch' my hats and what I put them through, If I have my AB on and it breaks out in a storm, I dont hide the hat - I wear it.
But if the day starts off bad I may put on one of my old Open Roads instead of my sweet Penneys Marathon. But if I have my Marathon on, and it turns bad, I just wear it.

I have a nice canvas fedora by Stetson (made in Sri Lanka). This is my everday casual hat, rain or shine. Rainwater beads up nicely on it.

Cheers,

OK, along the lines of this thread....I wore may Whippet today. Pouring rain and snow. Needless to say it get wet! OK now here's the problem....the darn thing smells like a wet dog...or maybe a wet dead beaver! Is there anything I can or should do to allleviate this wonderful aroma? I did sit it out on a vase to dry so that it wasn't sitting on the brim or the crown. Thanks guys!

There was a day when all men wore hats, Sun, rain or snow.
Now we're afraid to wear our hats in the rain.
Time to quit fussin.

I wear my hats in all kinds of weather.
What's the sense of buying a hat if you're not going to wear it.

Gene Kelly wasn't afraid to wear his hat when he was "Singin' In the Rain"!

In the '40s, my father and most of his business colleagues wore 'rubbers' on rainy days. They looked like this:

They are still available here. I don't know about their traction on slick floors, but I don't remember ever seeing my father or his friends slip on a polished floor, and they didn't have to tiptoe either...and of course you can slip them off once you get inside.

Like you, Dixon, I'm neurotic about my best leather shoes in the wet, mud and snow. I think I'll get a pair of these.

Well, I'll be....yep, may old man carried rubbers too, but they sure wouldn't fit on his Oxford Wingtips!!! Parump...pump! I'm gonna get me a pair of these, but do you think we can call them something else....like rain booties, or overshoes, or....

I wore them as a kid....and called them "galoshes".

...in the rain. Isn't that what they're for?

No, actually they're fashion accessories.

Nobody would set out to make a rain hat from felt, with all sorts of folds, ribbons, and leather on it, and a brim under 3".

I wholeheartedly agree. The reason I started wearing brimmed hats was that, being an avid outdoors person, I found ballcap style hats pretty useless in terms of bad weather protection. But, I also found tha large brim western and/or outback hats to be somewhat of a nuisance in the woods. Moderate brim fedora style hats proved to be the happy medium. Like the previous post, I dislike carrying an umbrella. I much prefer a rainproof coat (waxed cotton of course) and a brimmed hat.
I also agree. Living here in Alaska I've experienced and seen everything you said.:eusa_clap I can always tell the greenhorns who arrive with there cowboy hats and worst of all ballcaps:eusa_doh:

You can't really argue with this one.

My view also. I have my hats to wear, and wear them all. Most of my better hats are cowboy hats, but I have the occasion to wear them in a stock working context, and do. That's why I have them.

I had remarked on our summer camping trip with the Boy Scouts, that you could tell the real "woodsmen" from the posers. People familiar with the woods don't wear shorts while hiking (one word - ticks) and don't wear ball caps because your ears either get burned off by the sun or chilled with rain. I was questioned, on that trip why I was wearing long pants and a brimmed hat, but I was one of the (very) few not swatting constantly at mosquitos and had shade wherever I went.

It's funny how, in our over informed modern society, so many people have managed to completely forget the elements are dangerous. They don't wear brimmed hats, and often dispense with all the protective clothing they can. Its not a good idea at all, but if you dress the opposite way, the uninformed will look askance at you.
