We've all lost our minds

There was a day when all men wore hats, Sun, rain or snow.

Now we're afraid to wear our hats in the rain.

I'm so afraid of touchin my hats w/ dirty hands... I'm making myself sick.

I can understand antique, collectables.

But, I've turned puss about my collection of crap wool hats.

I'm gonna just start wearing my Open Road. It was beat to hell the day I found it. Looks better now, than it did.

Time to quit fussin.

I agree. I've got one hat I wouldn't wear in the rain. The rest, well, that's one reason I wear them. Weather protection (sun, rain, wind, cold) is the functional reason to wear a hat in the first place.

I agree, but only to a certain point. For example, I have a suede jacket: I'm not being "fussy" for avoiding rain when I'm wearing it, and it's also not a crappy jacket because it can't take the rain.

I agree,
It's the main reason why I almost never buy a hat or a paire of shoes which oblige me to think about the weather or the activity of the day.

Leather and rain..

I'm absolutely nutty about wearing my leather soled shoes on days that look like rain. If I'm caught in the rain while wearing them, I'll tip-toe and side-step every wet spot and puddle like it's boiling lava or something! I absolutely cannot relax and just walk normally while in leather shoes in the wet! I'm neurotic about it! Yep!...I've lost my mind!

Speak for yourself!
I started wearing them BECAUSE of the rain (as I dislike carrying an umbrella), and my transitiion to vintage hats hasn't chnged my habits.
Personally, I USE all of my "vintage" items, rather than leaving them on display. For myself, that's the whole point of having them.

I wear my vintage hats in rain, because that's one thing they were for. Compared to moderns hats they also really don't taper much.

I think a big problem today is that getting a hat reblocked by a good hatter can be pretty expensive!

Wear 'em in the rain

I wholeheartedly agree. The reason I started wearing brimmed hats was that, being an avid outdoors person, I found ballcap style hats pretty useless in terms of bad weather protection. But, I also found tha large brim western and/or outback hats to be somewhat of a nuisance in the woods. Moderate brim fedora style hats proved to be the happy medium. Like the previous post, I dislike carrying an umbrella. I much prefer a rainproof coat (waxed cotton of course) and a brimmed hat.

If I had vintage hats, I'd probably wear them in the rain. I'm still too scared to go running around in an Oregon rainstorm wearing my Art-made hat without an umbrella (though I probably shouldn't, as I understand one went through a tornado with nary a scratch), but I have walked the soles off two pairs of leather shoes in less than two years by footing it around in the rain (and snow!) with them.

Someday I'll get over it. Really, I will!

I beat the heck out of my Akubras. I think it's fun. Because of my 7 5/8 - 7 3/4 head size, though, the vintage ones are so hard to come by that I tend to baby them. If I had a more common head size, I'd probably beat on them, too.

:eek:fftopic: Usually the higher is the quality of a pair of the shoes the better it react to water. A very good pair of shoes can be without risk plunged in the water.:eek:fftopic:

Even if I understand that some precious hats have not to be worn under the rain I think I would be more attached to an all pupose and everyday one.

That is exactly the day I prefer to wear leather soled shoes. If I wear rubber soled Rockports and walk onto the polished floors in our hospital, it's slip and slide until the soles dry. Leather seems to give a much better grip , eliminating the slipping!

wet leather

It is OK for finished leather vamps and soles to get wet occasionally. The important thing is to let your footwear dry naturally, and thoroughly, and also to condition them regularly. I use Bick 4, and it keeps the leather in good condition. It is important to use it on the inside, too, on the leather lining, and on the soles. If you let the Bick 4 dry well before wearing them again on wet pavement, they will not be slick. I have never tried using neatsfoot or mink oil on the soles, but those might help prevent the uptake of water. Of course, this doesn't preclude the regular use of polish, but it sure keeps the leather nice.

Whether it's hats or boots or anything else, it depends on whether it is replaceable or not. If I couldn't stand to lose the item, either financially or emotionally, it stays home.

In the '40s, my father and most of his business colleagues wore 'rubbers' on rainy days. They looked like this:

They are still available here. I don't know about their traction on slick floors, but I don't remember ever seeing my father or his friends slip on a polished floor, and they didn't have to tiptoe either...and of course you can slip them off once you get inside.

Like you, Dixon, I'm neurotic about my best leather shoes in the wet, mud and snow. I think I'll get a pair of these.
