While I do not wear western hats much anymore, here is a recent shot of me in my vintage Texas Hatters Lone Star Dude.

Hanging in the garage

My old Resistol is really a "close friend." It hangs in the garage because that's where I put on my boots, coat, and hat to "cowboy up" when I go outside. I do like the "Gus" look and think my hat could stand a change.

Glad to join this discussion... For starters, my compliments to Rooster: like the picture, and not only the hat...old tweed jacket (Harris?).

In 1963 till 1965, I lived (13-15 yrs old) in El Paso, TX. Never had a hat. Never cared, either; it wasn't my culture nor upbringing. Back in Belgium, early 1970's, I got involved in country-rock and was lucky to receive a Bailey as a gift; I still have it, even if it spent some multiple-year stints safely stashed away in a closet; nowadays I wear it regularly. In Belgium? Yes. In spite of what any one might think -I'm not a C&W music fan, no way, in fact- I like this hat very much and wear it whenever the weather is inclement, like it is so often here, walking the dog (my wife and I go on long walks). I have always believed western hats are far better than the "fine" stuff from over in Italy. Agreed, that's very much a matter of perception, and the use of shellac. Lately (it comes with age, I reckon), having seen some good recent "western" films shot in the El Paso/Big Bend/Odessa triangle, I have come to realize I did actually once live there. I respect the country, the people...more than merely the "myth", cowboys and all that. Never underestimate any one, I say. And...that excludes acceptance of the rather uncomfortable feeling of being some sort of weirdo when having to face the kind of inconsiderate remarks some people feel they must make...hee haw lol

no photos, sorry, but do have a favorite-"The Angelo" by Hatatorium, San Angelo, Texas- that I flattened the brim on, and put teardrop crease in the crown; took to it like a duck to water...
Light buff color, and dense but soft felt, thin ribbon-comfortable!!

Is there a name for the slight curl on this hat that goes around the back? I used to see hats like that all the time and still see the odd one here and there usually old and well worn. The original Gus had it too.

Thanks.. Ron

Thank you.. It's an old (25 year) Eddy that had been seriously crushed and neglected. It's a stingy brim and just didn't look right on me as a gus. I later modified it to a 50's TV (sky king) sort of shape.. Ron

Well, it's about time I started posting pictures. Here's me wearing my recent Beaver Hats acquisition. The hat seems to be typical 1980's, well-shaped but over-stiffened. This is particularly obvious around the head-perimeter: when chewing, the hat follows the movements my temples... :eusa_doh:

Below is a picture of Irene and myself. Here, she's wearing the (same) Beaver Hats one, whereas I'm sporting my 35-year old Bailey beater. I like that hat very much: medium-soft felt, pliable, re-bashed umptheen times, a full life ahead of itself...

Stetson

I'm pretty sure that's a custom Stetson. He liked that style of crown, popular with the cowboy actors of his day. The actually sell a repo of the same hat I believe, but probably with about 96 less X's.. Lol... Ron

PS; Ya-know.. I really liked him.. Not as a politician, but as an American

What kind of hat is this, do you suppose? It appears to be a silverbelly cowboy hat, but from the crown, at least, it seems soft. Most cowboy hats are "bulletproof."

I love these westerns you guys are posting up. Lots of great deals on OFAS on for these babies. You can refurb an old one and have it looking good much cheaper than buying just the felt for a new one. Even the old dogs can be turned around. Here's an old brown Miller Bros taco shaped piece I got off the bay that I reblocked and trimmed into an Eastwood "Man With No Name" hat...
