Western, anyone?

I’ve been watching this one for months and there has always been something that holds me back. If I knew it was a soft pliable hat like a vintage Open Road I’d bite. The seller states it appears unworn. Anyone have experience with one of these?

I’m searching the Other Open Roads thread too. It’s more than I want to spend on a shot in the dark.

The smudge on the low right of the photos was caused by a flaw in the original photographer’s lens.

I have a Thoroughbred 10X Moleskin Finish. You won't find it to be soft & pliable but more like a typical Western. I'm not sure what Moleskin finish means except the hand is probably a bit more finer than a typical Western. Mine is natural beaver.

I dumped a bunch of pics a while back so I don't have any from when it came to me. The model I have is called the Derby because of the rounded crown, I guess. At the time I was looking to make a Planters hat (like below) so I sunk & telescoped the crown & flattened the brim. Sometime later I converted it to a Civil War guerrilla hat.

If you should decide you are not interested, I might be.

Thanks Jack. I have a couple of issues: The price, the size (it’s labeled 7 1/2 and I’m firmly in the 7 5/8 Camp), and I was looking for a hat that I could easily recrease into more of a fedora. I wonder if your 10X was stiffer due to its derby designation?

I don’t mind buying a hat and then reblocking it and sewing in a new sweat, but at the price the seller is asking it would need to take zero work. Might be worth making a lower offer?

As I wrote this I talked myself out of the hat. If you’re interested and can’t locate it on your own (I think it will be easy for you) send me a pm and I’ll send you the link.

I found it. At 7-1/2 I'm not interested either. I wouldn't want to reblock & lose more brim width. Interesting to see it though.

I found this Miller Stockman by Master Hatters of Texas while thrifting today. 8 dollars, 3X beaver AND my size...couldn't resist.
After ironing the brim and steaming out the crown.

6 inch open crown, 3 7/8 inch brim. 210g. Nice thick perforated sweat. The felt was pretty soft and floppy, but stiffened up considerably with an ironing. Definitely an upgrade to my other Western, the Bailey I occasionally wear.
No clues on the age, but I'll guess late 70's to early 80's.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in a western. It looks good on you John. It might even make you smile in a selfie some day :)

Still got this 1998 Glenn family O'Farrell 50X Signature Collection in line to do something with. It's a cream color & not as white as the pics. I'm thinking of a mild Tom Horn crease & bring the fenders down. I've already pulled the Vogt hat jewelry off. It has some bug damage but a 1-1/4 - 1-1/2" ribbon will cover most of it. Has a very nice hand being 50X.

Received my new beaded hatband from the beader today. It will be going on this Stetson 3XCB but for now I just slid it down over the 2-cord ribbon for color check. So it's not fit up tight at the top edge & is not even tied. I have a little work to do on the crease yet before I remove the 2-cord & tie on the beaded. The beader thinks it is a pattern of the Crow tribe. She did an excellent job duplicating the pattern I wanted.
