Were to buy used fedoras?

Is ebay the only option for buying used fedoras? Are there any used hat shop retailers in your town or city? Since I live in the land of the rising sun I'm just curious to hear from others. Back in my Chi-town days Salvation Army and Goodwill were good sources.

I live in Iowa and from what I've seen so far, there is one small but nice hat retailer in the capital city of Des Moines. I have not had any luck with Goodwill or Salvation Army. There is a vintage shop or two that MAY have something decent every now and then, but I'm not sure. Ebay is probably a good source.

Real fedoras are one of those things I dont see a lot of in either Goodwill/Salvation Army-type, or antique stores, and where I live, these types of stores are, if not everywhere, then not too far from anywhere. But I am sure they can be found if you look hard and long enough.

I rarely come across anything beyond Stingies at Thrift Shops, but have gotten 2 really nice vintage widebrim fedoras for a buck a piece at St. Vinnies, one is a Cavanaugh, and the other a Stetson. I also got a newer, generic one which is my daily driver that I really like. Even got a vintage derby recently for a buck.

I have no way of knowing how this stuff works over on your side of the globe, Viktor, but in my territory you rarely find hats worth buying in thrift shops. The supply is not quite so slim in the antique and vintage shops, but the asking prices in such places are often unrealistically high, at least by my way of seeing it. However, the merchandise can often be purchased for considerably less than those marked prices, especially if the would-be purchaser knows the item has been in inventory there for a lengthy period.

But you won't find if you don't look. Thrift shop picking is among my recreational activities, and while I usually leave those shops empty-handed, I do occasionally come across cool vintage stuff, including a hat every now and then. Not often, mind you, but they do turn up.

As gtdean48 already said, the FL classifieds forum is a great resource.

I have become convinced that our local Good Will has all the decent hats being funneled off. There are people working there who are syphoning off the good hats ... everything except the baseball caps and those stupid tiny brim things you can buy at Wal-Mart for $5 brand new ... apparently so they can hide them, hoard them or haul them out of town for resale. They certainly are NOT improving the taste of the community by wearing them in public.
I know it sounds paranoid, but just remember the famous saying ... "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean people are NOT talking about you!"
