Pardon my lack of knowledge, but what's the difference between a chat room and using Instant messaging? We have to use IM at work, so everyone can tell where we are etc. We can also "call" each other. Can internet users outside the lounge "see" our IM accounts without being members? What would be the drawback?

There isn't a whole lot of difference, only with Office Communicator, you can only communicate with one person at a time, and in some programs, invite one or two more people into a conversation.

With a chat room, its the same as a physical room - Anyone can walk in. There could be 50 people in a conversation at one time. I don't believe it would be open to lurkers, only members who sign into it.
