Washing Unsanforized Jeans

I could sell them, or hang onto them in case I start putting on weight, and/or the more modern cut stuff I am trying have me singing soprano.

They are currently measuring about 20" across waist, 35" inseam, and 13" front rise. If you want I can post some pics.

I'm a total Newb at this stuff, have never sold anything online, this is even the first forum I have ever been on. You probably know what they are worth better than I do. If you want I can post some pics.

Bute, don't know if those pics went through, or if they were too high a resolution. The jeans haven't lost much indigo, and seem pretty well put together. I suppose I could sell them, especially since my 1976 501Z STF came out great. I was thinking of trying one more hot wash and dry in the machine, but they probably will fade. What do you think they are worth?

Anyone know if there are any other solid middle weight (14+) straigt cut selvedge jeans out there with a Zipper fly, that aren't too skinny, tapered, or slim? I was thinking of getting the 1947 Sugar Canes. I like the cut, but I also like having a zipper.

The folks at Self Edge are trying to talk me into a 21 oz. pair of Iron Heart. Don't think I'm that brave (or rich) yet.

If I have learned nothing else from the Lounge I have learned to look at actual measurements of a garment rather than labeled sizes. Jeans labeled as size 36 should measure 36" at the waist IMO.

That's how it was most of the time way back when, Fanch, and I couldn't agree more. Even allowing for subjectivity of fit, which is never to be underestimated, what the tag on a garment states should have reasonable relevance to actual size, but that's but a dream from a time when many things made more sense and buyers expected the same.

Getting measures are very important, no doubt, but I value even more true knowledge of fit from a merchant who has tested and studied the fits many, many times across various body types so as to have a critical understanding of what will and won't work. Nothing will ever be 100%, but I certainly aim for getting close to that and hope to end up at or above 90% success.

I find paying through the nose and backdoor, cheap deals can be equally repugnant. Choose both product and merchant wisely, and find the true value in both.

Received the Sugar Cane 1947s today. Went up to a 34 from my usual (vanity sized as I've learned) department store Levi's. If it's of any help I washed them right away in the machine in delicate setting, without soap, with cold water and then let them hang on the line outside to dry. The length feels about 1 inch shorter post-wash which is precisely how I believe they were described. I notice little difference in the feel of the waist but they may have to settle in a little to lose some of their post-wash rigidity. I can safely say that it is very likely that stretching the waist manually will yield success. I notice a littke waist elasticity just by pulling on them, so I'm sure a mechanical device to stretch the waist will work.

Excuse the crappy photos; here they are (mostly) dry. Unfortunately, no turned up cuffs too self conscious for that. Maybe the gf will instill some confidence booster to try that...thanks to Charles at HPA for saving the day w/size.

Yes, I have used the stretcher that works like a charm. The critical factor is wetting down the entire waist band to avoid possible damage. More importantly though I am glad you made it through Irma alive and hopefully not too much property damage. Irma was one vicious, hellacious storm that appears to have affected everyone in the state of Florida with the exception of the western panhandle that is really more S Alabama than NW Florida.

Unbelievable. We were 100+ miles from the eye and still got 110 mph winds. They actually tore the top off an African tree in my yard: not the branches, but the whole top half of the tree! We can only be grateful it wasn't worse. Thanks for the good wishes.

Tropicalbob. Wow ripped the top off an African tree. I'm glad it didn't rip off your roof. I have family in Coral Gables. They hunkered down and made it through with now major issues. I'm glad your and yours are well.

The LVC 1964 501Z XX came out pretty good with first hot soak. I did just now notice some zipper warp, so they probably were unsanforized. I expect the material will stretch out and fix the warp.

The RRLs were the ones that really threw me. They had to be sanforized. I have never had a pair of jeans come out bigger after hot machine wash and hot dryer. Although, they seem pretty high quality. If I boil them, I might end up with the equivalent of white levis to go with my new Pendleton Board Shirt.

"The "uniform" back in those days of surfing music was white Levis, black low-cut Converse tennies, and, of course, a Pendleton shirt. In case someone might forget, a local hit had heavy rotation on the local radio stations, KFXM and KMEN -- "White Levis""

As you say, a lesson learned.
