In my suit and tie days I carried a wallet made by Hartmann which is very nice, still have it, but spendy. Now I use one by Duluth Pack and like it a great deal. I have the black leather wallet, not the leather and canvas version.

The "Right Stuff Wallet" sold by J Peterman is quite nice. A fine color, and very thin. I just got one a couple of weeks ago - BUT - I didn't get it from Mr. Peterman. If you do some digging around, you'll find out where Peterman's wallets come from, and you can get it for 80% off. :D

Any hints? :) I've done some pretty extensive digging with Google, without success.

Search not the Google, but the eBay. They are made by Mulholland Bros. They come up for auc - skip the buy it now ones which are not a good price at all.

I like mine very much. It really does get softer with use, and takes on a great color - just like an old baseball glove.

I can also recommend wallets made under the "Branded" label. I bought mine on eBay for about GBP20.... the most expensive wallet I've ever purchased by far, but it's a lovely quality leather, in a fabulously rich cognac-brown hue. Space for about a dozen cards, too - everything i need can be stored in there without a problem, which s a distinct bonus as I do tend to cart around a lot of stuff.

Contact The Leather School which is located at the Church of Santa Croce in Florence, It. It is a very famous landmark. The students do beautiful handmade work at a very reasonable price. I like brown wallets too and the first one I got which I thoroughly abused lasted 15 years. My current one has also been abused and looks new after 5 years. I prefer soft textured leather because it does not show marks like untextured leathers.

I believe they still ship. If not, hop a plane and go to Florence! It's a great trip and Santa Croce is well worth seeing. It is the burial place of almost every famous non-royal Florentine. Buon Viaggio, Sam

I have the long style wallet, that you keep in the inside breast pocket of your suit in a tan leather. it's not a branded item, I searched on ebay for a while and found some one making the style I wanted.

My regular everyday wallet is a black ballistic nylon from Assault Systems aka Shooting Systems whos luggage is really well made. I have had this wallet for over 15 years and other than a couple of stiches out it is in great condition and out lasted many other wallets.

I have the top one pictured here:

Hi all -- didn't see anything through searches on this, so thought I'd just ask.
I would appreciate any advice or comments regarding a high quality leather wallet. Who makes one? Anyone have experience with Filson's very expensive ones?
One of the reasons that I like vintage items is that they generally are of good quality. After opening my poor leather wallet this morning and noticing that after a whole two months of use, it's coming apart :kick: -- I decided that I would look for a good wallet (though after purchasing it, I will likely not have any money left to put in it).
Thanks very much.
David

I own several Filson leather wallets and they hold up well. My credit card wallet goes for regular swims when I'm fishing and after it dries a little boot oil to condition the leather is all it gets. The more you use them the better they look too. and if you do manage to kill it just call up Filson and they'll replace it or fix it.

Use the code SFFilson1 at my place and save an additional 20 percent on anything Filson except luggage. SFFilson2 gets you an additional 25 off of luggage. That's on top of my little 5 off cart trick.

Show us your wallet!

What kind of wallet do you carry? Vintage and modern? And are there any advantages or disadvantages of using one over the other?

To start off, here's my new wallet, picked up at a vintage clothing fair for a couple pounds. Pre-decimalisation, leather is in very good, supple condition. 6.5" x 4.25" when closed.

I keep two first class stamps in their holders, card go in the unflapped pocket on the upper half. The business card holder between the stamp pockets isn't big enough for modern cards. The flapped pocket is the entire wallet deep. Stays in my jacket pocket.

Just a quick note, who (if any) vendors make a good 1930's 40 period wallet? Just curious.

For those that carry breast pocket wallets, what do you use in the hot summer days when you don't wear a coat?

Great thread idea!

I'd love a vintage wallet, but I like to keep my change in it. Most vintage wallets (if any) don't have this property. (I also know that in many countries, change is never kept in the wallet, but loose in the pocket etc)

I have a modern wallet, but not new. It's a basic one, nothing too thrilling.

Forgive me, gents, for intruding on this thread, but my current novel has led me to ask an important question: what did a man carry in his wallet in the 1940s anyway? I'm assuming a driver's license if they drove. But were there any other kinds of identification cards? I'm speaking strictly to America on this one as that's where my novel is set - the American Homefront.

Any ideas? I figured I'd come to the experts. :) Thanks in advance!

I'll hold out and wear a linen or tropical weight blazer for as long as possible. Past that, I have a hip pocket wallet to use if the jacket isn't an option. Which means I'm more limited on trousers, because not all of mine have hip pockets :eusa_doh:
