don't know if this is connected enough or not, but I bought this Frankie Darro 1933 still from Wild Boys of the Road by William Wellman and thought I'd share the high resolution of the scan...

These trouser remind me a bit of what carpenters (and some other craftsman I think) wear in Germany when they are on the "Walz". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journeyman You still see occasionally some young men doing this

Leather bow tie

Here is a classic item of workwear. As a kid growing up in the '40s, I had a bus driver who wore a little leather bow tie on his khaki work shirt. These were actually fairly common; usually worn by workingmen who had considerable contact with the public and wanted to look good, e.g., gas station attendants, delivery truck drivers, surveyors, linemen and foremen of work crews.

This is Brace Gilson, the Atlantic Weatherman, who presented his forecasts in full Atlantic Oil station attendant uniform: replete with uniform shirt, visored cap and leather bow tie, on WNHC-TV in New Haven, CT.

Here's a curious note: You can still buy 'em. They're much in favor with the leather & latex crowd.
