So many interesting things to pick up on here. First, the quality of the photographs. Around 1938 you start seeing better lenses and film. This leads to much higher resolution in the prints, and this leads to much more natural and intimate poses. Also, color becomes more common. From around 1940 on the best images show a naturalness and immediacy which breaks down the barrier of time. I find this kind of uncanny.
Another thing, all the stuff from Montgomery Wards looks the same! lol
Finally, when you look at the images from the 1940's it's very clear the change in style after the war. The New Look came in about 1947. Skirts became longer, women's hair became shorter. To me the difference is striking.
I'd love to reproduce 1930-1940s clothing one day and its always good having sources to like this to gain ideas of styles, especially since I'm English and it's good to see slightly varying styles from America
