If you've ever seen that book about Dry Lakes Racing; "The Birth of Hot Rodding"- you get to see a lot of them (cable knit)in use- them, jeans, Flight Jackets and hats. A lot of great '46-'49 crowd shots in there-

That book has been sitting on my Amazon Wishlist for a LONG LONG time now. I have to get it. What flight jackets are most common in the book would you say?

ALL!

One double page photo(I think)has a line of guys standing around and there's everything from a A-2s, M422s, to B-7- lotsa flight jackets. Loads of other surplus gear to- M-41 jackets, USN Donald Duck caps, eith the brim pulled down like a sun hat. Crazy assortments of clothing from '30s to late '40s.

Get it- you'll pore over it-

Just a note...

In addition to the difference in fabric and cut, older t-shirts actually had a different shape. Take a look at these two completed auctions:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-1940s-W...423131433QQcategoryZ52387QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Post-WW...423124667QQcategoryZ52387QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Notice how the arms go straight out and there is no downward sloping? This is a detail that Buzz Rickson seems to have missed in its reproductions:

That's the type of shape I am looking for - thanks for posting that, great illustrations of that difference.

Just ventured out into the modern world of clothing retail. It was scary but I went in the hopes of finding a vintagesque Stripey shirt.

After work I took a trip to the main store(Fortunoff in Westbury) to check out my billboards, banners, and other misc. signage. I stopped by the Mold Navy store and also H&M. Mold Navy had 2tone ringer Ts on sale for $5 - no stripes. H&M had tons of Stripeys! And in a semi-vintage cut. I got a few in short and long sleeve. They are all cotton knit, the long sleeves would make a good short sleeve with some simple alterations on the old singer. H&M was a bit more pricey at $20 for the long sleeve-worth it, and the short sleeves were $12. I will post some pics when I get around to it.

Ciao.

Ahh, H&M...my secret treasure trove of vintage style tees! They have so many different types of striped tees, all vintage cut, and they look like the ones from the old catalogs! I got long sleeve ones last winter with knit waistbands and cuffs! Looked absolutely 40's-50's!

One of mine...

Well, it was a beautiful day and felt I should drag out one of my old knits... this is an original late 40's cotton knit striped shirt with a ribbed bottom... I tucked mine in today, kind of looks sharp I think... I wear it out or tucked, depends now how I feel.

Any way, I felt the colors in my outfit worked well with my '46... and also, note the original 1945 CA Plate I have on my car now... I also have the proper original '46 tag!

American Apparel

Supposedly, American Apparel t-shirts imitate the earlier cut of brands like Hanes and Fruit of the Loom before they outsourced their manufacturing operations overseas. They're cut tighter and would probably have a more vintage fit.

I've got one thermal undershirt made by American Apparel that I was given as a present. It's really great - fits like a dream and it's incredibly soft. If you're into ringers, they've got 'em, too.
