Vintage roadside

Great photos Rob

The older miniature golf courses have gone the way of the public shuffleboard courts, I'm afraid; most of the vintage versions have been replaced by Mega-mountain/pirate-ship/exploding volcano do-everything-under-the-sun-arcade monstrosities....there's only a very few of those nostalgic courses left.

The guy who ran Adventure Golf there in PF told us he was getting a lot of heat from the city to "do something" with his course, basically tear it out and put in something that fit in better with everything else. He and I had a nice conversation about how all the old stuff was disappearing.

This one is on old 441 in Ocala, Florida...not too far from John Travolta's house/complex...

This one is on old US-27/301 in Belleview, Florida....it's cool, because the name of the motel "VIN-MAR" is spelled out with white shingles on the roof, for those traveling folks flying over the town, I suppose.

It's funny dh66 that I have stayed at a wigwam in Arizona but only live 1 1/2 hours for the wigwam in Cave city and have never seen it. Sounds like I need to get off by butt and get there. You never seem to notice the things in your own back yard!

This house is in Leesburg, Florida, and has been abandoned...with the same car in the garage...for the last 15 years that I know of; it looks to have been even longer.

These are the blast furnaces at Bethlehem Steel Mill in Bethlehem, PA...I have a lot of photos of this place, taken on an old vacation trip, before the Sands casino bought the property and revamped it; I'll just post one here, but there were a lot of abandoned and impressive structures there.

Those are way cool Rob. Pretty wild that the old car has survived there that long.
That old blast furnace looks a lot like one that is here. It's been turned into a park and we take the kids there a lot. I'll snap some pics next time we're there.

Kind of 'roadside', this UP Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam loco (my favorite) is at Steamtown N.P. in Scranton, PA. This is No. 4012 (12 of 25 built), now inoperable, but No. 4014 in California is now in the process of being moved back to the UP shops in Colorado, to be rebuilt as a running specimen to join UP's historic, running fleet.

Somewhere in central Florida....the building is long gone.

I love these old water towers; I snap photos when I can find them, because they are slowly disappearing, being scrapped for the steel. This one is in Tifton, Georgia.

Yeah, it caught fire several years ago, and the city had decided to tear it down, but the seniors there took the initiative to raise the money to save and restore it...they did an excellent job.

Speaking of Friedlanders, here's another one, in Lake Wales, Florida...

As is this old hotel, which is completely empty, and takes up the whole block downtown....

Here's an old train that someone has put to good use. The front part is a bbq restaurant and the caboose is a coffee and donut place. Just had some - they were good!

Fantastic hotel. Are there any plans to refurbish it? In the right community, developers would be falling over themselves to bring it back.

Funny, but for all the talk of gas station burritos I was in L.A. last week and ate here. :p

That building was formerly owned by the father of a guy I knew in the late-70s/early-80s; at that time it was purely a service station that sold gas and did minor vehicle repairs and maintenance. My friend told us an interesting story about one of the nights when he was working the late shift and a "low rider" pulled in to get gas. At first glance he thought the car looked as though it had been fully restored so, being a "car guy", he walked out to take a closer look. It wasn't until he got half-way to the car before he realized some of the window glass was shattered, and that the person filling the tank was covered in blood. He asked if they needed any help and was told "no", but as he turned to walk away he got a better look at the occupants of the vehicle and noticed they were also covered in blood. Being a young man and not wanting any trouble, he waited until after they had departed before calling the police, and when officers arrived he simply told them what he had seen, the license plate of the vehicle, and the direction they went. He never knew exactly what had happened, but said it was fairly obvious they had been in a gun fight.

I bowled there a lot when I was a kid. :thumb: It wasn't the best maintained bowling alley, but it was cheap fun and there was always a lane available as long as you weren't there on a Friday or Saturday night.

There were postings on some of the the exterior security fencing to that effect, but this photo was taken about 5 years ago, and I haven't been back down there recently to see what has become of it.

Having no idea what this entails in terms of time, milage and inconvenience - but if possible, it would be great to see what has happened.
