Hello again, fellow hat friends!
A little progress update on my vintage TONAK hat making project!
Pictured here is a lineup of beautiful vintage rabbit fur felt hats I’m currently working on, using materials generously passed along to me by Mr. Gus Miller of the historic Batsakes Hat Shop in Cincinnati, Ohio (Est. 1907).
My goal is to create traditional open-crown hats using some of the more than 900 vintage wooden hat blocks and flanges I acquired from Batsakes.
These hats will primarily feature 2”–2½” brims in sizes 56–60 cm, with open crowns that allow their future owners to shape them to their personal liking.
I’ll also be incorporating some of Mr. Miller’s original sheepskin leather sweatbands, bringing together vintage materials, traditional tools, and old-world craftsmanship.
There’s something truly special about giving these decades-old materials a new life while preserving a wonderful piece of American hat making history.
For my fellow hat enthusiasts: What’s your favorite way to crease an open-crown hat?
Looking forward to sharing more as these hats take shape!
Keeping the tradition alive, one hat at a time!

Hat People Always Shine!
