Selling a gorgeous vintage Lock & Co Hatters Open Crown Fedora from 1969 made of genuine long beaver fur felt in a beautiful honey brown shifting color with olive green grosgrain band and beautifully constructed satin lining. It is in perfect condition and 100 % handcrafted. The lining is stamped with Lock & Co Hatters, St. James’s Street, London and Eric Skoglund’s exclusive brand. The brown leather sweatband is stamped with Lock & Co letters in gold as well.

The style is timeless and versatile, creating an elegant and time honored “wave” shape. It was made at a point in time when pure craftsmanship was an honored skill and in high demand. A vintage exclusive hat such as this one, can’t be compared to any of the Lock & Co or Christie’s hats produced today as the skill level and quality of craftsmanship is like night and day. To make such a hat today is too costly for the company and retail price would end up at over €1000 for the customer. The only option for equal quality is to go to a custom or bespoke hatter, such as Optimo or others where prices start from €1300 and up for a fedora free from chemicals and made from 100 % beaver.

Materials
Crafted from 100 % beaver fur felt.
Model
Meteor/15
Color
"Honig" Honey
Production date
November 3 1969

Measurements
The hat is sized EU 57 or UK 7,
Measured with tape is 16x20 cm or UK 6,3” x 7,87”
Width of brim is EU 6,5 cm or UK 2,56”
Height of crown with grosgrain band and bow EU 12 cm or UK 4,72”

History

The hat was bought new for a handsome amount of money, by the first and only owner, my grandfather, at Eric Skoglund, which only sold luxury clothing and accessories. It was considered as one of the most exclusive brands in Sweden and a royal court supplier.

Condition
The hat is in perfect almost museum like - condition and has been extremely well-kept in a pet and smoke- free environment during 55 years. The felt feels like velvet to the touch and is so lightweight and comfortable that you forget you’re wearing it.

A beautiful example, indeed!
What leads you to say it’s made of 100% beaver?

Hello!

Thank you! It is truly an amazing fedora. I was told it is made out of pure beaver and I 'm at least 90 % sure it is from the feel and smoothness of the felt. It's like butter to touch. I've compared it to the other hats that are made out of rabbit and this one is much softer and smoother. But then again, I'm not an expert. I'm trusting my hands and what I've been told. What I can say 100 % is they sure knew how to make hats back in the day.

Not that it matters, but my understanding is that the best “long hair” hats generally contained at least some rabbit or hare out of necessity, to achieve the fuzzy finish.

Yours has no indication of content at all, unless there is something hidden under the sweatband. Did you look there?

If I were a betting person, I’d be betting on a bit of bunny being blended into the bunch…

Thanks for sharing the link. It's very interesting to read how they worked for weeks to achieve the look on the felt.

I loved the brown Mayser "Velour", by the way. What a hat!

Now that you mention it seems quite possible that it could be a mix of hare with beaver.

I checked inside the sweatband today and found nothing....
