Ouch! That heel. I always want to buy shoes from Bakers because they have cute styles and great sales - but then I imagine walking around in the 4-5" stiletto heels they love to put on their shoes. . .

Yeah, even with the platform that's pretty impractical. Even for just wearing them around the office-forget walking around the city.

They are cute, but I have to ditto what the other ladies said about the heels. And stiletto heels weren't invented until the 1950s, and even when they started were about 2-3" in height. Definite retro styling and cute, but not really true to a time period outside of now.

When it comes to authentic vintage shoes or even replicas of the era (1940) I tend to favour the modern "retro" shoe. Not only because vintage shoes often are fragile being "worn" more, but also because the chunkier wedges of the 40s make me look a bit to "square". Being short and a bit of a pear type... ( oh, how I´d love to be tall and statuesque :) I look better with a bit of a heel in a vintage dress. I have a real soft spot for either the plattform shoe with a straight and a slim heel ( like some of the shoes in Top Shop ) or a round neat toe with a thick straight high heel ( say, that of a great cabaré shoe ). Either way its fair to say that I´m slowly becoming a shoes and hats addict...:D D

I'm the opposite! I prefer shorter heels than 4" and platforms are hard for me to walk in, besides being heavy. And I have plenty of vintage shoes and they're not fragile at all (unless they were fragile to begin with). I'm not fond of 40s wedges because of the chunky look, just like you, but 40s and 30s heels are different completely. They're the original design source for modern "retro" shoes but with practical heights and non-synthetic materials.

OMG I love these. And while I know stelletos aren't authentic 1940's but I love them. And since I have done ballet for just about 20 years now (yes that's right I started at 2 and 1/2) so it is really not any different then dance is to me. And to be honest most people other than us won't know the difference.

few things :

one: You can get shoes like that on GoJane.com CHEAP. 30 bucks top.
two: I LOVE heels like that, even if they aren't authentic....but I'm 5'8...with heels like that, I'm freaking 6', my guy friends have to look me dead in the eye or up and I get nothing but comments about my height...not what I'm going for, so I stick to flip flops.
three: I looked for MONTHS for a cute pair of Black and White Wingtip Heels for homecoming...couldn't find one that WASN'T a 5' heel and part of a "naughty" gangster costume an in my size (10)....went to the mall over thanksgiving break, a few states away...there they were sitting on the wall, boy was I ANGRY.
four: has anyone looked at this site http://www.unique-vintage.com ?I like it!

zac posen and a retro mix

I really really really love the work Zac Posen is doing these days. I used to be a real purist about "regulation vintage" but now I am liking "mixing it up". Especially when it's done ingeniously and not lamely. What I don't like is a vintage style... done in polyester. ZP seems to capture everything I love about vintage- the colors, the textures, the "dressmaker details", the "otherworldliness". I guess my only criticism would that his look is not femaleness-emphasizing-to-the-nth-degree in the way the vintage styles are that most of us here love, but that's minor. He is amazing. I often like Galliano's vintage-referencing work a LOT, too.

And that's actually something I like! I love being able to wear classy stuff for everyday, and I enjoy the "everyday" vintage style more than the "movie star" vintage style.

Funny, you mention that, because I'm sick of the pinup thing. No offense to anyone here. Don't get me wrong, it's cute and all, I just feel it's been over-done. I've even dressed it myself, but I'm tired of it. [huh]

I tend to like the 40s business stuff. I wear things that are very much like the outfit with the model in the beret, including wearing berets. However, I wear granny boots (with that outfit), instead of pointy toes with it. hehe. ;)

It make me think of the fashion trends of everything, for the past 15 or so years. You know it's over when Hot Topic carries it (we can thank them for it). Started with the goth thing. All of a sudden goth became about fangs and plastic capes...deathrock died, so this is what kids had to go on.
Following was rockabilly/pinup, Hot topic cheezed it up and ran with it. My brother (pomp wearing gearhead) about died when this happend.
Now, we are on emo...My son is into this and I don't want to even begin to understand it. These kids weren't even a thought in the 80's, but footless tights and Pat Benatar hair is it (they don't even know whom she is).

Sorry, I'm sounding old. hahaha! lol
