I just came back from cheap jacks. They had a lot of good hats but only two that I really liked. Stetson both of them. The only issue was that I already have a couple of hats in that color (charcoal grey)
Any other place in NYC?
I was going to mention Starstruck as well, although they never have anything large enough for me (7-3/4). I've seen hats at the outdoor flea market at 17th St. and 6th Avenue, once a beautiful brown Bergdorff's bowler that I should have bought in spite of its small size. There's also the weekend flea market on 25th St. between 6th and 7th Aves, it's on the south side in a parking garage, although I haven't been in there in years. If you find anyplace good, I hope you'll post it.
I've stopped in Cheap Jack's a few times, but left unimpressed. Most of their hats were off brands made of rough felt and a bit worse for wear. I was also put off by the fact that they have tags on their hats identifying the decade they date from, and most are clearly erroneous (unless everything I've learned from the FL about dating hats is wrong). That wouldn't be so bad if they weren't charging so much for them. I realize that rent in that area is expensive, but that's no excuse.
While I was browsing, the sales woman complimented my hat (an Akubra Federation), and asked to see it. She thought it was beaver. I told her it was actually rabbit, like most of the hats she had for sale appeared to be, and she got offended and insisted that they were all beaver.
For the money, I think you could do much better on ebay.
