Vintage Christmas?

With the clock ticking down to Christmas - what are you doing for Christmas that's slightly vintage?

The only thing I'm doing so far is making Christmas presents instead of buying them from "Generic Presents R Us" - fudge of various flavours (including Baileys Irish Cream, if there's any left by the time I come to box it up). This is partly due to the fact that my pocket money isn't stretching very far, and partly because making presents gives a sort of old-fashioned glow to Christmas.

So are you doing anything slightly vintage? Or is anyone going to have an all-out completely vintage Christmas?

Not really doing anything vintage. More traditional family stuff, which really isn't vintage. Luckily for me, money isn't an issue so I can afford to do what we've always done.

December 23rd we'll be showing "It's A Wonderful Life" as a special charity event for the local community fund -- we usually have a food barrel in the lobby, but this year we wanted to do something beyond that. As usually is the case when we show a vintage film I'll be doing the intro.

Christmas night, I'll be working -- always a good movie night.

Well, of course, I'll have a real tree. I have a lot of very old ornaments as well.
My favorite vintage Christmas viewing includes a beautiful BBC production from about 1980 of Dylan Thomas's "A Child's Christmas in Wales". I just got a DVD copy of at, after years of watching it on worn our VHS.
A couple of years ago I went caroling with a bunch of people from the Village Light Opera Group, around Brooklyn Heights. That was really special, VERY Dickensian.
I'm hoping to have a holiday party at some point with good old fashioned libations like mulled wine and cider, and that wild Swedish concoction Glog.
The best thing is that I'll be up in the Finger Lakes with my neice and they'll have tons and tons of real genuine white fluffy COOLLLD snow!

I usually decorate with very old ornaments that belonged to my parents and grandparents. Lots of good memories of the fancy ones I adored as a little girl. However, with a new (and extremely happy) dog in the household, it may be better to do without the tree and decorations altogether. Fun little gifts: making Christmas CDS for friends with music from Dick Powell, Doris Day and some of the Big Bands. (Does keeping my fingers crossed for a pair of vintage shoes I'm loving count as a Vintage Christmas activity?)

This just hit my rusty old brain: I've been talking for YEARS about wanting to see the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. Talk about great NYC Christmas traditions! Anyone else interested??? (I'll post this on the Events thread, too.)

I went to see the Radio City Music Hall Christmas show back in the 70's. We saw the Rockettes and a Disney animated Christmas feature. I don't remember the name but Mickey and Pluto were main characters.

I will soon be lighting up the Anderson shelter again to spread a bit of Christmas cheer.

Not sure what Warden Hodges woudl think, but he never had to deal with a 5 year old who wanted her house to be a Winter Wonderland.

It's not premature at all!! Tis the first Sunday of advent this week, and Advent calendars start on Monday, ergo it is allowed to talk about Christmas!

I guess over here we don't have Thanksgiving, so we start thinking of Christmas earlier.

All the shops over here have had Christmas stuff since early October, so I think waiting untill the end of November to discuss Christmas is being very restrained (for me at least lol )

Well to save some money and support artists, I'm buying handmade goods from Etsy.com or buying vintage. I'm also trying to make gifts. Christmas is my favorite time of year, I just love buying presents for friends and family. I'm only going all out with my two best friends, ex-boyfriend and family, the rest will only get one gift each. Normally I give everyone 2 or 3!

I think supporting crafters and artisans is a very vintage (and important!) thing to do.

I've got my Christmas music from the 40's and 50's on the CD player, as well as the old Christmas records I used to listen to when I was a kid. Nothing brings back those great Christmas memories better than those songs.

I'll watch my holiday classics - especially Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck. LOVE that movie!

I also hope to hit some of the local dance places that have swing nights - never been to them before, but I'm thinking now is the time to start!

I always put the tree up on the 12th December, I only use silver baubbles to decorate it. I have a lot of old xmas shows to listen to the Alice Faye and Phil Harris show is a favourite of mine and also the Jack Benny christmas shows.

I got very excited last year when i saw that "Christmas in Conneticut" was on TV only to switch on and realise it was a terrible 80's re-meke of the Barbara Stanwyck classic , of the 1940's with Farrah Fawcet in the leading role this time

Christmas is the time I wait for all year. It means hope to me. Pure and simple.
The whole shebang makes me happy. Vintage decorations including bowls of vintage ornaments, tablecloths, aprons etc., movies, music. I try to squeeze as much of it out as I can possibly glean from it all.
Especially this year. It has been my goal to get to this time of year this year.
I will cherish each and every moment I can. Like a big delicious chocolate sundae with all the trimmings.

O Holy Night officially kicks off my Christmas. Till I hear it the first time of the season it is not official. I heard it last Saturday so I am in full swing. lol

Last year I stood in a nursing home with a bunch of little kids singing this song to all the old folks. It is my happy place and I go there when life is too hard. It will forever be in my heart what I saw that day.

Don't know. Usually I don't really bother at all until a few days bevore the 24th maybe, but this time I'm away from home, so christmas means going back home, seeing "old" friends and my family. So I'm actually counting the days, and don't know, I feel much more in christmas mood But don't know if I'll do anything vintage... Probably not, as my family is everything but traditional....
