What era do you think it is from? Is it western weight and quite stiff or does it have some softness/flex?

Yes it would be a western 3X but on the thinner side.
Vintage 50s as the quality is very good.

I wear 7 3/8 LO or 59 and 23 3/8" are the dimensions . Nice Hat Scott .
