Vide Greniers is the French name for flea market.
I had heard of car boot sales in the UK.
What are some of the ones in different areas called and the best ones.
Mont Parnasse is a district in France from my best googling that was originally a place that the Lost Generation went to so I am thinking alot of artisty people would be around there and hence great Vide Greniers. lol
Surely someone would know if that is the case.

Is it now just a shadow of its former self?

No, puces is definitely a flea market. The best one in Paris is the Puces de Clignancourt at the Porte de Clignancourt stop on the #4 metro line.

I was in the The Puces de Saint-Ouen in November and there is a wonderful vintage shop there ran by two charismatic and knowledgable people. They have all sorts of vintage clothes going way back to the 19th C. They also produce a small line of retro shoes that are perfect, incredible craftsmanship.

Should you find yourself there, avoid the lines of table stalls with their generic designer knock-offs and look for the little shops with antique furniture, paintings, light fixtures and statues. It is a bit like a tour through a museum.

There is one new building that is two stories with that sort of mall-ish architecture of green girders and glass. The vintage shop is there and downstairs is a wonderful antiques shop with an enourmous St Bernard who is incredibly sweet and likes to give hugs, so beware!
