I am brand new to your site and I must say that it's been extremely informative. I've been thinking of getting a hat for a while now and was apprehensive and nervous due to my height. I'm about 5'4"-5'5" and feel that hats are a tall person's accessory. I don't know if it's new self confidence or saying "screw it", but I want to take the leap. In general, I wear suits every day to work and then I'm either business casual or very casual outside the office. I have no problem buying a hat for business and business casual, I just need guidance on which way to go given my height.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome!

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I could see how the right hat would actually enhance a person's stature. I'm positive that hats aren't for "tall people". The FL has taught me that the right hat is out there for everyone. You just need to find the right hat for you.

Thinking/typing out loud... My first impression is that I wouldn't recommend a wide brimmed hat because it would tend to hide your face from people who are taller than you.

On the other hand, the wide brim might be the perfect fit for your features, so...

The question is... Have you tried on any hats? Do you know your hat size?

Again, welcome to the Lounge!

I'm 5' 6", and I don't think hats are for tall folks. Besides, people were shorter in the past anyways and they wore hats more often then. If anything, the right hat could make you look taller. It's all bout the proportions like a previous poster said.

Welcome! Just spent an evening with an old friend of limited height - he was wearing a nice brown fedora and looked damn good in it! Go! Find a hat! Fall in love! It's a hoot!

Quite a few of us out there...

I'm 5'6" as well (popular size for us shorter guys I guess :) ). You will have no problem wearing a hat.
Jump on in! The water's fine!

I had a short friend in high school who was heavily into the swing dance scene. He had a vintage pork pie with a stingy brim and it looked great on him. Definitely not just a tall guy thing.

Go for it, player676! :)

[slightly off-topic]

Can someone explain to me why hats are supposed to look better on a tall person then a shorter one? I would have thought it was the other way around... somewhat like high heels on a tall lady? [huh] And where do "rules" like that come from anyway? Don't wear xxx with xxxx, never mix X with Y, *** looks bad on tall/short/stout/thin... etc, etc. It all sounds like hogwash to me.

[Rant-mode OFF] :)

My Grand dad

I've posted this several times before, I have to admit, but I love this picture, and it's apropos. (I originally posted before I knew how to resize pics, sorry.) My Granddad was a jockey. He was 5' 5", and never weighed more than 100 pounds in his life. Here he is fishing around 1932. In a white shirt and bow tie, no less. I think he looks pretty cool in a very prodigious lid:
