This is going to be magic, UV. I'll be nearly as excited to see it as you are!

If I can keep myself disciplined enough to avoid the 2nd hand Japanese market the rest of the year, I'm fiddling with plans for a Western yoke Mohawk.

Have you handled that particular jacket before. I didn't get a chance when I visited the store. Was truly a pleasure working with them in person. I will say that it looks to have the same action back as the model A, which I found gave it amazing range of motion.

I can certainly let you know how it turns out.

Cheers!

You got it, the same action back as the Model A; no other jacket I've tried has come anywhere close to that range of motion. I found the Mohawk to be slightly more trim, and the drop difference between front/back to be not as pronounced. To me, an excellent alternative as an "off the bike" jacket.

My new Mt. Grainier

Just joined. Love TFL for the wealth of knowledge. Surely one could easily spend themselves into insurmountable debt on the priciest jackets, and so long as the fit pics were on point maybe that would be worth it??

Fortunately there's a lot of wisdom in the Lounge on these topics, shout out to @Monitor for pointing out that price be damned it's hard to beat a Vanson. And @ton312 and @torfjord too for highlighting the quality of Vanson's old school comp weight.

When I saw this on grailed and noticed that crazy grain I had to have it. The icing on top was the zip in fleece liner. The weather is warming up where I live, but there's still a bit of time for leather jackets. Soon I can begin my off season training to prepare my ascent of this Mt. Grainier.

That's a great looking and fitting jacket!

Over on the other Vanson thread I had shared a fantastic early 00s comp weight E with troublesome sleeve zippers. Just had new sliders put on by Donna Howard from The Bespoke Aviator Jacket Company (turned out to be much more complicated than replacing a front zip slider) who has done a fantastic job—no opportunity for wear until autumn now though I hope!

Thought there might be some interest in what Vansons current comp weight looks like. I got this Maverick two months ago. At first the leather was very uninspiring, flat and uniform looking. After extensive wear over the last weeks it has developed some nice character. A bit of grain has started to show:

It is quite heavily sanded though, which you can see when you look closely. A lot of visible pores which does not look very nice

I’m not happy about it but I can live with it. It looks good from afar.

I've always wonder how you can tell if a Vason jacket has the "comp weight leather" or not.
I've only ever handled one Vanson in my life so I have nothing else to compare it with :)

For example my Vanson CHP(made in the early 90s if the seller is to be trusted), can some Vanson guru tell from pictures if it's comp weight or not?
It weighs about 2,7kg/5,95lbs and I'll throw in some pictures from my ****ty phone :D

Not an expert so any expert can correct me if wrong :p But from what I've understood, the old school CW was far grainier than today's smooth CW (as covered by @torfjord right above.

If the jacket is from the 90s then it should be that CW but as you say "if the seller is to be trusted", why trust the seller? Get the number ID from the jacket and contact [email protected] and they should be able to tell you when it was made :) My Highwayman size 42 they confirmed quite quickly that it was from June 1995 :D

Thanks for posting this. I handled several new comp weight jackets when I was getting sizing sorted out for my Pinnacle horsehide jacket, but they were brand new and hadn’t been broken in at all yet. The new stuff still looks great but maybe not as good as the old stuff.

Here’s my wife’s (practically unworn) Comet from around 2004. I think I may have posted these before, but it seemed relevant to post them again :)

Has anyone seen a C2 in Firenzi?
Vanson says it would be a custom order but I would prefer a well worn one if they're out there. I haven't seen anything.
I'm looking for a Midweight/lightweight cross zip for 60 degree days.

Vanson also has a Z150 midweight option. I would suggest getting leather samples from them so you can compare the Z150 to the Firenzie.

It takes time but it gets there.
Can confirm. My V7 (UG x Vanson) is most definitely an example of more current comp weight, and arrived with pores from collar to hem. While I understand some who are more picky about the surface texture, trust me when I say that after a few months of break-in/riding, the grain bloom is no less stunning than my early 00's comp Comet. It'll get there.

Honestly you cant even really make that statement: "old school CW was far grainier than today's smooth CW".
I have vanson in comp weight from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s and all you can say is that it changes, some is grainier than other, some is smoother, some are thicker, some are thinner, there is no way to say that the 90s where uniformally grainier than the 2000s.

To me the real difference is in the printing/sanding. The latest versions of CW are printed/corrected leather like the one on the left posted by jason:

I second @JonS1967's appreciation for this post @torfjord, thank you. I've been curious exactly what was meant by visible pores. Here is a shot of factory floor new Vanson Medium Weight on a Comet I ended up bringing home from their showroom in MA last year. It is next to a Comet in Brandy Roma. View attachment 708456

You never see things like that in 90s and early 2000s leather, then sometimes in the late 2010s they changed their source and started using more corrected leather, whether by printing or sanding.

The leather on the left is Vanson's Medium Weight (Firenze), which is tumbled and thus quite textured. I can attest to what I have read from others that it does not appear to be heavily corrected as I can find hide imperfections.
