He only missed a day of work in more than 70 years. That's impressive. Either the guy was very healthy, or he didn't want to stay away from work, or both. Hope he liked his job!

He may have had limited earnings which were not at all or only partially offset by Social Security drawbacks. I forget the current ceiling but for his many years married but eligible, it was higher.

If he had become disabled, then SSA could have kicked in before the 65 retirement age. Works both ways. He could have started collecting had he retired and your "pocket his benefits remark would have been inoperative I guess.
