The music world would have been better if Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia never learned an instrument.

Add Bob Dylan to the list and you have rounded out my lousiest ever. For goodness sake, if you are going to sing about the Garden of Eden then don't get so stoned you can't even pronounce it right when you sing.

Music of the early depression years was a lot hipper and had more jazz content than historians want to admit. It makes the swing era less of a social awakening.

Wow - some pretty harsh stuff here. Lots of criticism of artists that I like. But thats not what this is about.

Artists I just dont see any reason why anyone would listen to them:

Rolling Stones,
Elvis,
Joplin (borders on the ear-bleed category),
the song Freebird - this was an anthem here on LI in the 70s and 80s I guess. I cant stand it.

Hip-hop

I can't stand hip hop. It's so trashy I feel like I need an infection check after listening to it.

But let me be really unpopular here and say that I actually like the Beatles. Some of their songs anyway.

I cannot stand the Rolling Stones, and I think that the Animals are dull at best. I really like the Beatles, although I think that John Lennon was a joke. He was a mediocre musician and a sub par poet who would have gone nowhere without the melodies of Paul McCartney. That said, George Harrison was the best.

I do like Elvis though. Not saying he was original, I just like his voice. Not huge on Sinatra, love Dean Martin. I wish that people still wrote such great songs, so that Michael Bublé would not have to continue to sing 60 year old material.

On to concert music.
I rather like Wagner.
I think that Shoenberg was one of the worst things that happened to western music (not that his was terrible, it just set a bad precedent.)
It is a shame that more people did not imitate and build on the style of Gershwin.
John Cage does not deserve to be called a composer.
Puccini may be the Andrew Lloyd Webber of opera, but he gets me everytime (by the way, Webber is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine).
I may be starting to like Donizetti.

Ok, name one song that bears merit---not something that they were copying Chuck, Elvis or some of the other stars of the time. Definitely not any of the maggot infested hippie stuff from later either. Duck! :laser::hippie: Got him just before he got away.

Rue, I agree, Pink Floyd sucks! And so does Led Zeppelin
