marty gave me some good advice to just go with a heavy black leather wingtip. classy, and fits the bill.

I would consider spectators a little too casual for a wedding myself. Maybe a plainer shoe would fit better with the occasion?

I'd be inclined to that view myself also (for the wedding party at least - I'd happily wear them with a lounge suit myself, in season of course, as a guest).

Plus spectators are really meant to be summer footwear. Just sayin'.

Mostly; those with white or at least light coloured panels are certainly Summer footwear. Those with darker tones are suitable for Winter wear. For example, I have a pair with a burgundy heel / toe and a black vamp, which are perfectly correct for Winter wear.

And please, don't wear spactators with a tux. Please?

The far greater sin is the contemporary North American insistence on the wearing of black tie for daytime weddings.

You really need some black wingtip Spades!

Brogues are markedly less formal than a cap-toed Oxford, though it's all subjective against the desired level of formality. As the men at this wedding will be wearing lounge suits, they can get away with a more informal shoe than had they opted for morning dress.

Boots aren't necessarily informal. That particular pair aren't really any less informal than a brogue ("wingtip"). Actually, boots are the most appropriate thing for formal daywear. Button boots with a suede upper, ideally, though given that those are virtually impossible to find, and involve a very expensive bespoke production, the best option these days is along the lines of these, from Herring:

The Herring Holmes. Assuming available funding, these would be my choice for wedding wear, in particular with morning dress. Of course, again with lounge suits something less formal is always an option.

Didn't say "Boots" are informal. Up to the 1920's, 99% of all mens' footwear WAS boots. That's all there was, and this is definitely an elegant period. I just was saying that THAT pair of bots is very informal.

I was hitched in a pair of these some 11 yrs. ago, October.
They fit the bill w/ a black coat & slacks. I don't know that I've worn them since.

I thought they were kangaroo or kidskin and felt great about my purchase. 2 weeks later, the leather started to separate around the lacing and the glue on the sole loosened near the heel. UGH!

it is not the slim, however, but it is a slightly trim cut. at least i hope to get this suit. have to decide by tomorrow afternoon.

anyway, consensus seems to be away from the spectators and towards a plain. captoes, wingtips. any specific suggestions?? i'm open to anything. thanks fellas. this has really helped!

On the spectator end of your search, not sure if you would want to "dabble" in doing a conversion from an all black shoe, but there are a few very nice NOS and vintage shoes on eBay currently that are in your size, that you could apply the white acrylic Angelus leather paint on and make them be a spectator shoe. The process is somewhat time consuming, but if you take your time you will be very happy with the end results. I would however not suggest you buy cheap shoes like the Stacy Adams, (sorry I am not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings), but they just are not worth the money in my best heartfelt opinion. You can always find a decent pair of pre-owned shoes on Etsy or eBay and find a full leather well made shoe that will be more supportive, comfortable and if need be you can have a cobbler do the heels or soles. I have found some very decent bargains on things all you have to do is just keep on the look out. There are right now some vintage "continental" NOS in size 11d (look and you will find them) that would be very perfect for wearing to a wedding, all shiny black and for the price of $39.00 plus shipping....and they are well made all leather. I may find them and post a link for you later or tomorrow they have been on eBay for a long time, (I was going to buy them myself)! I am extra picky about buying shoes, and quality and how well they are built mean more to me than a brand name or how old they are. But I do have to admit, shoes made "back in the day" seem to be made better than most modern shoes. You can still get a decent pair of wingtips from Florsheim if you buy the Kenmore model. Again just my heartfelt opinion.

I see some older stacy adams angle boots bringing decent money on ebay. Was there ever a time where they SA made a good shoe/boot?
