I love turtlenecks. I find them incredibly comfortable, yet dressy enough, and I want to make them the staple of my wardrobe. When did turtlenecks become commonly accepted casual wear? I know they were worn by sailors for eons, but at what point did it become acceptable to wear a turtleneck as everyday attire? And when did the mock turtleneck become fashionable for more than just beatniks to wear? I want to say the 50's on both counts, but I'm not sure. Thank you.
