Troopers still wear them!

I wish that Michigan had stayed with the campaign style covers. I don't care for the current uniforms. Do you know when they made the change? As a side note, it now seems rare to see an officer wearing his cover when he gets out of his vehicle...the uniform isn't complete with a bare head.

Deanglen, I figured the url thing out.
Even though I live in Texas and wear cowboy hats, I have to say that I've nener much cared for those Texas DPS hats. The summer straw versions are exceedingly dorky. I think they should have more a bit more brim, and a lot more attitude. Most of the Texas Rangers have figured that out, but they get to choose their own headgear.

I've noticed the bare head thing, too, Sinatra. I have no idea about the choice of cover for the MSP. It looks to me like someone was trying to avoid the military connotations of campaign covers (I'm tempted to stop calling the "hats", must be the USMC influence of "The Wind And The Lion"). I have my own theories about that, being a resident of the state. You know I'd prefer campaign covers, 'fore and aft', 1st choice, "montana" peak, 2nd. And you are so right, they should wear the cover, whenever they are on duty. I would.

Vern, you realize that church thing is the church I serve here in Fenton. What I can't figure out is how it got linked with that trooper cover collection. My favorite was the Connecticut.

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever seen an Ohio State Trooper without his/her cover on outside of the vehicle, and rarely without it inside.

Cheers,
Tom

I personally like the service cap the michgan police forces wear alot, even more then the trooper hats. The michigan city police forces wear them more than any state's local police forces in the US that I'm aware of. Just look at the Detroit police they are always wearing cover many times in the car. Plus the service is more militaristic than the trooper hat because the trooper hat is only a DI thing, the service cap is the standard international military and police cap.

It's good to hear that others are wearing their covers. Maybe it's my military background, but I like it when our police officers wear their covers to complete their uniform when they are in the public eye. Just my opinion. (On a side note, you'd think that they would wear the campaign covers more often. They look much more intimidating than a bare head. Or maybe this is why they changed...to look less standoff-ish and more approachable.)

Just my two cents :) .

I have noticed this in Detroit. It seems that local police departments are sometimes more stringent on these guidelines than some of the state posts.

Very true. Still, I like the look of the campaign style. Personal preference, I guess.

By the way, Metropd, I'm guessing from your username that you are a police officer, or affiliated in some way with Detroit's PD. Is that a safe assumption, or am I off base? Just curious.

Rhode Island may be a small state, but their troopers look large and commanding and service hats may be the police standard, but I like the looks of this crew, they look like they mean business!

I used to live in upstate New York and the Trooper hats looked more like Conneticut's than the current. It seems odd to me that they would switch to a cattlemen's crease.

No I am not but thank you. I studied crimminal justice, International Security forces and more ism's having to do with law enforcment and criminal justice. I was a volunteer for 3 years with the San Diego Police Department and I'm in the process of trying to become a full time police officer. Police uniforms and hats are what actually got me into 1930's fashion and fedoras. The authority the elegance the prestige and just a profesional look. I love campaign hats especially the Rhode Island State Police uniforms I just like service caps more. I particularly like those ski slope serges on service caps on the Thai police the Italian police and the Indonesian police.

I wore a service cap every second(literally) I was on patrol for the SDPD and know I will do the same when I become a full time officer. By the way I worked state security and I was the only one who always wore by brown campaign hat with a kaki shirt and brown pants, I looked Identical to the Illinois State Police.

Those boots are awesome! Oops, sorry, the hats, too, Dean.

Dean, this that Connecticut hat a tan or grey? The Maryland and New York are definately tan, but I can't quite tell on that Connecticut.
