johnny try Dixie gun works they have a full line of period hats and clothing also you might look at historical re enactments or muzzleloading shoots like the nmlra fall shoot this comeing weekend in friendship Indiana
I know your in Canada but they have mountain man shoots there as well

Did a little more reading and it seems the hat became popular in areas with heavy rains. The front was higher so rain would run off the sides. Also it has been noted on some reinactors posts they stay on your head in really strong winds. I still want one but still can't afford one. Thinking of making one myself. $15 floppy womans hat from walmart and pin it up myself.
